The Supreme Court rules that commercially operated, nonreligious private schools cannot refuse black children because of their race and that whites, as well as blacks are protected under the law against discrimination in private employment.

Maurice Sage, president of the Jewish National fund of America, collapses and dies while he was handing Betty Ford a Bible at a bicentennial dinner in the New York Hilton Hotel. The first lady turned pale as secret service agents gave aid to sage.

In what he called his “most difficult decision ever” - Senator Barry Goldwater endorses President Ford over Ronald Reagan for the Republican presidential nomination. “... I do not believe that our government can suffer through months and months of reorganization that would be necessary if we had a change in the office.”

Harry Becker - the all-night talk host on KCKN in Kansas City dies while on the air. He was talking to a woman when all of a sudden he stopped. A police officer arrived at the station around 1:30am and found him slumped at the mike.

Clayton Moore - the Lone Ranger on TV tells police someone stole an 1833 Remington revolver from his van in suburban Chicago. “There will be retribution for this ... retribution.”

Passing - lyricist Johnny Mercer (66) - wrote 1,500 songs, winning four Oscars. He once remarked: “I tried to be a singer and failed, I tried to be an actor and failed. So I just naturally fell into lyric writing.”

Marries - Peter Lawford (52) to Deborah Gould (25). She’s the daughter of entertainer Rowan Martin.

Actor Richard Hatch replaces Michael Douglas as Karl Malden’s sidekick in “The Streets Of San Francisco.” After his success in “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” which won him an Oscar - Douglas wanted to do more movies. He’ll be written-off as a professor of criminology.

Newscaster Frank Blair says that after 12 years of co-hosting the “Today Show” with Barbara Walters - he found her “rude and inhospitable.” “I never felt close to her. She was aloof, very cold, very aggressive.” Blair left the show after 23 years last year. “I can tell you from inside sources that NBC officials are delighted she has gone to ABC.”
