Hammered by over two months of NATO warplanes, Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic’s government capitulates to the U.S.-led alliances demands, agreeing to pull out all soldiers and police from Kosovo and permit heavily armed Western troops to help escort the province’s war-shocked populace back home.
But wait - Talks between a Yugoslav delegation and NATO break down in Kumanovo, after a second day when Yugoslavia balked at signing the alliances orders detailing the promised withdrawal of Serbian police and soldiers from nearby Kosovo.
Hillary Rodham Clinton interviews several political operatives at the White House. It’s said she wants to make a run for the Senate in New York.
President Clinton launches a federal inquiry into the entertainment industry’s marketing of violent movies, music and video games to children. “We can no longer ignore the well-documented connection between violence in the media and the effects that it has on children’s behavior” said Clinton.
In Las Vegas – Zane Floyd, an ex-Marine walks through a local supermarket, randomly firing at clerks and customers, killing four employees and critically wounding a fifth.
Washington - Romance novelist Nancy Richards-Akers is shot twice in the back of the head and killed by her estranged husband – in front of her children. A short time later on the grass facing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Jeremy r. Akers put a shotgun barrel into his mouth and pulled the trigger. Police say he died instantly.
Sports News – June 1, 1999
In Paris - Venus and Serena Williams win their first Grand Slam women’s doubles title. They’re the second sister team to win a Grand Slam doubles event. The first, back in 1890, was won by Ellen and Grace Roosevelt.
More Grand Slam tennis as Andre Agassi becomes the fifth man to win all four Grand Slam events.

At 35, Johnny Depp is now a dad. Baby Lily-Rose Melody Depp is born in Paris. Mom is French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis.
Television news – June 1, 1999
Nickelodeon premieres its first original Saturday morning cartoon – “SpongeBob Squarepants” on July 17. SpongeBob is a sea sponge.
The final “Home Improvement” airs on ABC-TV, getting a whopping 35.53 share!
