Radio Address - President Obama is urging Congress to extend tax breaks for the middle class, saying it's "unacceptable for some Republicans in Congress to hold middle class tax cuts hostage simply because they refuse to let tax rates go up on the wealthiest Americans." With the clock ticking toward the so-called "fiscal cliff," Obama asked lawmakers in his weekly address to "begin by doing what we all agree on" and extend the middle class tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year.

A tunnel on a major highway in central Japan collapsed on Sunday(Dec 2), killing at least three people and starting a blaze, Japanese media reported.  At least seven people were unaccounted for in the 4.7 km (2.8-mile) tunnel in Yamanashi prefecture, about 80 km (50 miles) west of Tokyo on the Chou Expressway, a main road connecting the capital to western Japan.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and thousands of coastal residents were ordered to evacuate to higher ground, but the tsunami warning was lifted two hours after the tremor struck.

Toyota Motor Corp's U.S. sales rose 17 percent in November from the previous year, to 161,695 new vehicles, the company said.

Citigroup said Wednesday(Dec 5) that it will cut 11,000 jobs, a bold early move by new CEO Michael Corbat. The cuts amount to about 4 percent of Citi's workforce of 262,000. The bank did not spell out how many of the jobs will be in the United States. Most of them, about 6,200, will come from Citi's consumer banking unit, which handles everyday functions like branches and checking accounts.

Yellow fever has killed 164 people over the last three months in Sudan's Darfur, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday(Dec 3), an arid region the size of Spain where fighting and banditry makes access particularly difficult. Healthcare is provided almost entirely by aid agencies in parts of Darfur, where rebels took up arms in 2003 complaining of neglect by the central government hundreds of miles away in Khartoum.

NFL news/information – Jovan Belcher – a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs shot and killed his girlfriend at a house near the team's facility on Saturday(Dec 1) morning. The player then drove to a location near the team's main campus and took his own life. Per the Kansas City Star, members of the team's staff tried to stop Belcher from committing any other acts of violence before he turned a gun on himself. The Chiefs' Arrowhead practice facility was evacuated and is currently on police lockdown.

A federal bankruptcy judge has approved bonuses for executives of Hostess, the maker of Twinkies, who stay on as the company is broken up and sold off.  As part of a plan to liquidate the company and lay off 18,000 workers, a federal judge in White Plains, N.Y., approved paying 19 Hostess executives bonuses totaling $1.8 million. Hostess has said it has interest from at least 110 firms who want to buy pieces of the operation.

Unemployment dipped to 7.7% - the lowest since 2008.

Verizon and Coinstar this year announced a joint video streaming service to compete with Netflix  and Amazon.  The service, which is called Redbox Instant by Verizon, is now in its testing phase and is set to become available by the end of the year.

Google aquires e-commerce company BufferBox for $17 million, thus giving Google a potential presence in a market that has long been dominated by Amazon.

After a long period of closed beta testing, Microsoft made the beta version of its social network, Socl, available to everyone on Tuesday. Socl initially launched this May. It's a search-meets-social networking website that looks more like Pinterest than Facebook, and has until now been open only to invited Microsoft employees and college students.

"Crazy" Tony Lindsey - the cousin of "Honey Boo Boo"'s titular star Alana Thompson" - was arrested in Georgia earlier this week following a goofy, but dangerous, stunt involving a gorilla suit. A police report says that Lindsey was among a group of men arrested for reckless behavior after one of them, dressed in a gorilla suit, prepared to jump into a lane along Highway 20 at approximately 11 p.m.

Alec Baldwin who plays ruthless executive Jack Donaghy on "30 Rock," has entered an overall deal with Universal Television, the studio arm of NBC Universal that produces the series. That one was on just 1,600 screens though. "Killing Them Softly" was in 2,422 theaters.Expectations were modest for "Killing Them Softly," distributed by the Weinstein Company. Analysts had the film doing $12 million and thought it might do better, based on the appeal of Pitt. 

2012 Kennedy Center Honors - David Letterman's "stupid human tricks" and Top 10 lists vaulted into the ranks of cultural acclaim Sunday night as the late-night comedian received this year's Kennedy Center Honors with rock band Led Zeppelin, an actor, a ballerina and a bluesman. Stars from New York, Hollywood and the music world joined President Barack Obama at the White House on Sunday night to salute the honorees, whose ranks also include actor Dustin Hoffman, Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy and ballerina Natalia Makarova. Letterman made a rare red carpet appearance with his wife, Regina Lasko – who is rarely seen in public with her husband.

Shakira being sued by Ex-Boyfriend – as Antonio de la Rúa  seeks to "recover damages" of at least $100 million for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty. The monies, states the suit, are owed to de la Rua as part of his standing arrangement with the star, although there is no written agreement between the two. The surviving members of Led Zeppelin,  Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones visit the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Monday (Dec. 3) for a rare joint interview.

Passing - Dave Brubeck, a jazz musician who attained pop-star acclaim with recordings such as "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," died Wednesday morning at Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Conn., said his longtime manager-producer-conductor Russell Gloyd. Brubeck was one day short of his 92nd birthday. He died of heart failure, en route to "a regular treatment with his cardiologist,” said Gloyd.
