In The News

The Reagan Administration attempts to calm tumultuous financial markets even as the stock market fell sharply for the second day in a row and interest rates continue to ascend. Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III called recent nose dive an “overblown” reaction to inflationary fears and misleading trade statistics. “Conditions do not warrant ‘Apocalypse Now’ worries or scenarios,” said Baker.

As stocks tumble in frantic trading, the New York Stock Exchange says it will shorten trading hours on Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

Friday – The Dow Jones plummets 108.36 in the heaviest trading in history (so far). Over the past two weeks, the Dow has lost 393 points and is at 2,248.73. Everybody’s looking at Monday.  

Monday – Fear and panic as the DOW plunges 508 points – the largest single-day decline since the 1929 market drop.

Tuesday - The stock market roars back from its $500 million collapse with the Dow Jones up 186.84 – halfway back from Monday’s 508-point nosedive. 

President Reagan tells reporters that he has reached a decision on how to respond to Tehran’s attacks on U.S.-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf, but he gave no details.

(So this is what the President meant) - U.S. warships and demolition teams destroy an Iranian oil platform in the Persian Gulf in retaliation for Iran’s missile attack last week against a U.S. registered oil tanker in Kuwait.

 As hundreds of rescuers and on-lookers cheer – 18-month-old Jessica McCLure is pulled to safety 58 ½ hours after she fell into an abandoned well in Midland, TX.

A smiling Nancy Reagan escorted by her husband, kicks up her heels during a balloon-filled return to the White House five days after breast cancer surgery. “I’m touched… I’m very, very happy to be home – very.” A grinning President stood by her – “I’ll say, ‘Welcome home.’” “I’m going to get her upstairs now.” 

A disabled Air Force jet clips the roof of a bank and slams into a crowded hotel near the Indianapolis international airport after the pilot failed to make an emergency landing and ejected safely from the plane. Nine are dead as the front of the Ramada Hotel erupted into a fireball.


Fascinating Facts – General Mills Cereal Needs a Reprint – October 15, 1987

A newly designed cereal box featuring a picture taken from a Bela Lugosi’s role as Dracula is drawing protests from consumers and Jewish newspapers, which complain that a Star of David is prominently displayed on the character’s chest

The likeness involves a new technique which is computer lifted.

About 4 million boxes were printed, but General Mills says the design has been changed to eliminate the medallion in future boxes. The boxes have not been recalled, they will be sold. 


Sports news – October 15, 1987

World Series coverage on ABC-TV with Al Michaels, Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver. It’s Minneapolis Vs St. Louis.

In Atlantic City – Mike Tyson defeats Tyrell Biggs in the seventh round.

For the fifth time – Billy Martin is named as Yankees manager. 


Radio news – October 15, 1987

 Dr. Don Rose is now mornings at K-101 San Francisco. He’d been handling mornings on hit station KKIS, Concord (East Bay) of which he was part owner.

Neil Rogers moves to rocker WZTA from talker WINZ.

WMRQ (Q-103) Boston is now oldies WODS. 

WPLJ New York which had Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel of Love” ahead of its scheduled Oct. 5 release date, began playing tracks as world premieres on Sept. 21 and 22. On Sept 22, program director Larry Berger said he received a cease and desist earning from CBS.


Television news – October 15, 1987

Music news – October 15, 1987

Country Reba McEntire announces she will make her debut at Carnegie Hall. The date is Oct. 29. 

U2 Tour ’87 with special guests -  The Pretenders.

MTV changing - MTV is now adding top dance music to their video rotations, despite committing itself last year to a rock only format. One of the reasons – there seems to be success with “Club MTV” which features these kinds of videos. Groups such as “Expose” can now get regular exposure on the channel. 

“Club MTV” is filmed at new York’s Palladium, the show has already featured performances by Nile Rodgers, Col Abrams, Jellybean with Elisa, the System, LeVert, the Cover Girls, New Order and Debbie Gibson. Upcoming programs will spotlight Alisha and Jody Watley. The program also features fashion segments.

Jimmy Osmond, who is all grown up now, had a lot to do with Michael Jackson appearing in Japan. Jimmy represents NTV (Nippon Television) and got them to co-sponsor with Pepsi.

Passing – Jacqueline du Pre, the cellist who mastered the most difficult pieces in the cello repertoire, but was unable to defeat the multiple sclerosis that cut her life short. She was 42.
