The Soviet Union says that teams of workers were tunneling beneath the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in an effort to avert a melt-through at the smoldering plant.

Moscow -  A release says six people died from radiation and burns received from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster.

The scientist in charge of clean-up operations at Chernobyl says the danger from the damaged nuclear reactor has passed, while soviet television took viewers inside a safety zone around the plant.

The Democratic-controlled House Budget Committee approves a fiscal 1987 budget that would increase taxes, put tight restraints on defense spending and generally freeze funds for domestic programs at this year’s levels.

Lawmakers wish Prince Charles and Princess Diana long lives after Charles made a historic speech to the Japanese parliament calling for closer East-West ties.

Marxist Ethiopia says its top relief official during the 1984-1985 famine has fled to the United States with at least $300,000 in famine aid money.

Former Libyan Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Bakoush, now in exile in Egypt says ore than 300 Libyans died in the U.S. bombing raids last month and reports that Moammar Khadafy’s “adopted daughter” was one of the casualties, were fabricated. “Khadafy never had an adopted daughter,’ Bakoush said.

Passing – Stage and television actor Herschel Bernardi – Best known for his Broadway role as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.”  He was 62.

Joan Rivers is on a book tour for her book “Enter Talking” and will appear on Chicago’s “Oprah Winfrey” show over WLS-TV along with “Today” and “GMA.”

The late-night feud between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson apparently continues as Joan Rivers cancels her scheduled appearance on “Late Night With David Letterman.” She says she’s just not feeling funny these days, so says her agent.

Vanna White of “Wheel of Fortune” says yes, she’s single, lives with two cats and 15 fish. “Wheel of Fortune” along with “Jeopardy” are two top syndicated shows with a combined weekly audience of 42 million people per week.

Talk show host Phil Donahue and a pro-nuclear activist get into a fight at LaGuardia Airport after the protester shouted that Donahue and his wife “ought to be murdered.” According to a source – “the fists were flying.”

Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca joins the ranks of celebrity-guest stars on “Miami Vice.” He joins stars such as G. Gordon Liddy, Frank Zappa and Phil Collins who have appeared on the series. Iacocca will play a Miami parks commissioner. “Miami Vice” has been renewed for next season, finishing in 9th place, up from 45th place the preceding year.

Rex Reed will be flying into Chicago once a week from New York and Showtime’s Bill Harris will be flying in From Los Angeles to do “At the Movies” – Tribune entertainment’s new syndicated weekly movie review show.

Tom Selleck and fellow “Magnum P.I.” actor Larry Manetti just bought the Coors Beer distributorship in Los Angeles.
