Passing – singer/actor Dean Martin (Dino Paul Crocetti) (78) dies at his Beverly Hills Home of acute respiratory failure. Known as the “chief-deputy” to the chairman of the board in Sinatra’s “Rat Pack,” Martin started out as a solo singerin records and radio. (He did a 15-minute late-afternoon show on WMCA in NewYork City in the late 40′s.) Teaming up with Jerry Lewis, the pair wasunstoppable in movies and as a night-club act from 1946-1956. As a solo artist,Martin scored on the charts during this period with huge hits on Capitol Records -hits like “Return To Me,” “That’s Amore,” “Memories Are Made of This” and “Volare.” After the pair split up in 1956, Martin continued his recording and moviecareer, often appearing in dramas such as “The Young Lions” in 1958, “Some Came Running” in 1959 and “Rio Bravo” in 1959. The late 50′s and early 60′s saw Martin team with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and JoeyBishop for several movies and nightclub appearances (esp in Las Vegas) as “The Rat Pack.” In the middle of the Rock n Roll British invasion – he scored a #1record with “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” and other top-10 records during the mid-60′s “The Dean Martin” variety show, was one of the top television shows through the 60′s and into the 70′s.

Some Dean Martin quotes through the years- “Two of the greatest turnin’ points in my career were, first, meetin’ Jerry Lewis. Second, leaving Jerry Lewis. I became a realactor because of these two things.” About acting – “And if any actor tells you it’s tough, tell ‘em they ‘re full of beans … To become half a success in what you do, you have to enjoy it or else you become a griper. The good Lord gave me a talent and I’ll use it until I run dry.” “I like people. I love what I am doing and Ithink people can tell that. You know more men want to see me than girls. You know why? I never sing to the girl. I figure that some guy is paying the bill and here I am singing to his girl, then he’s gong to get threatened. I don’t flirt with the girls like Wayne Newton does. I sing over their heads”

Martin’s second wife – onetime Orange Bowl queen Jeanne Beigger – “I married him knowing nothing about him. I divorced him 23 years later and I still know nothing about him.” Condolences – Frank Sinatra – “Dean was my brother -not through blood but through choice. Our friendship has traveled down many roads over many years and therewill always be a special place in my heart and soul forDean. He has been like the air I breathe, always there, always close by.” Jerry Lewis, according to his manager Joe Stabile is “completely shattered and grief stricken.”

Said comedian Alan King: “I am going to have a drink right now for him.”Goodbye Dino – Jerry Lewis, closing his tributeto his longtime partner said – “Rest well and don’t forget to short-sheet my bed when I get there.” Also paying tributes to the superstar at his funeral – Shirley MacLaine andRosemary Clooney. Other attendees included Barbara Sinatra (Frank couldn’t make it and was said to be too overwrought to attend), Angie Dickinson, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Robert Stack, Tony Danza, Edie Adams and Cyd Charisse. Las Vegas hotels including the Sands, Stardust and Flamingo dimmedtheir lights on Thursday evening for 10 minutes, in Martin’s memory.

Mr. Pop Culture Report – October 26… Madonna’s Fitness… 2 1/2 Pieces of Furniture… Jon Stewart Most Inflentual Man? – You’re Joking!… Kevin Costner Is Doing What??

Pop singer Madonna is opening a chain of fitness centers around the world to be known as Hard Candy Fitness global gyms. A partnership between Madonna, her manager and New Evolution Ventures plans to open the first gym in a posh neighborhood in Mexico City on Nov. 29. Madonna will attend the Mexico City opening. A statement by Hard Candy Fitness says gyms “will open in major cities around the world,” including 10 more locations in Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Europe and Asia. No gyms are immediately planned for the United States, but the statement noted that more locations are possible in the future.

Charlie Sheen was briefly hospitalized Tuesday after security at the Plaza Hotel called police to report he was disorderly and had broken furniture in his room, police said. His publicist blamed an allergic reaction to medication, and said the actor was discharged Tuesday evening and on his way back to Los Angeles. Another report says it straight – he was in a suite with a hooker doing cocaine. Like furniture polish -Sheene left a shine.

We now live in a world where Jon Stewart gets voted most influential man. Don’t take it from me – ask “AskMen” dot com.  OK, say it three times – Jon Stewart is the most influential man of the year…

Kevin Costner – who’s acting days are pretty much behind him – somehow – lands the hosting gig for this year’s “CMT Artist’s of the Year.” CMT as in country. Costner’s claim to country fame – well, he has a band that plays country music – Modern West. Really though – Kevin will keep good company with the likes of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. It happens Dec. 3.

Mr. Pop Culture Report – August 20… Dee Snider’s Town… Too Much Material For Madonna… Fox On CBS… Finally – A Facebook App For Thieves.

The village of Cridersville, Ohio, describes itself as “small town America at its very best.” On Aug. 21, the town will honor the frontman for the 1980s heavy metal band Twisted Sister by changing its name to Snidersville after Dee Snider. Snider himself, will embark on a motorcycle ride from Lima, Ohio, to the newly-named Snidersville to raise money for the March of Dimes. The town of 1,500 residents agreed to change the name for one day after Snider jokingly requested it do so on his nationally syndicated “House of Hair” radio show.

Madonna has been hit with a lawsuit over her new “Material Girl” ” fashion line for teenagers by a California clothing company that says it has been using the name since 1997. L.A Triumph filed a lawsuit against the pop superstar in the California Central District court on Thursday, just two weeks after the Madonna line went on sale in Macy’s. The company said in its suit that it has been “continually selling similar clothes in similar retail outlets at similar price points under their Material Girl brand since at least 1997, and Madonna and her newfound company do not have the right to trade in the same space under this brand.”

‘Back to the Future’ star Michael J. Fox is heading back for TV. According to reports, Fox will be guest-starring in the show “The Good Wife” on CBS. Fox’s role will be the role of Simon Canning, a shrew and cynical lawyer. The role will allegedly use Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to gain favor for his clients in court.

Facebook rolls out its long-awaited location feature, Facebook Places, an application that lets users “check in” on their mobile phones so friends know where they’re hanging out and what they’re doing. It’s a function similar to what apps such as Foursquare and Gowalla are already doing. But Facebook’s 500 million-user base dwarfs the 2 million-plus on Foursquare, meaning the “check-in” concept is probably new to a lot of folks. The app is perfect for thieves knowing you’re not at home.

Early Madonna Question… Pop. Culture. History.

From Eric L – Mr. Pop – Back when Madonna began making a splash – who was she linked to – romantically?

Mr. Pop History – Let’s take you back to November 1984 when her “Like A Virgin” album was released. She was dating mixer/producer John (Jellybean) Benitez. At the time, she was putting together a band for her first U.S. tour.

Mr. Pop Culture Report – March 11

Another sports passing – Pro Football Hall of Famer and former television actor Merlin Olsen has died. He was 69.  Olsen was an All-American at Utah State and a first-round draft pick of the Los Angles Rams in 1962. He was part of the Rams’ “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line, which set an NFL record for the fewest yards allowed during a 14-game season in 1968. Olsen is still the Rams’ all-time leader in career tackles with 915. Olsen was later hired as a sports announcer by NBC, then moved on to acting with roles in “Little House on the Prairie” and later his own series, “Father Murphy,” which ran from 1981 to 1983. Olsen, who was well-liked by those who knew him, was diagnosed with mesothelioma last year.

Pop Superstar Madonna and Iconix Brand Group unveil a joint venture to launch fashion brands globally, starting with a juniors collection to be sold at Macy’s department stores this August. The company, MG Icon, will be 50 percent owned by Iconix and 50 percent by the pop songstress and Guy Oseary, her manager, and it will hold a license to use the singer’s name for apparel, footwear and other products. A fast-fashion juniors collection, aptly called “Material Girl” after Madonna’s nickname early in her career when she scored hit songs such as “Lucky Star,” will be launched in about 200 Macy’s stores and online in time for back-to-school shopping in the United States.

From Karie L – Mr. Pop – Madonna once pulled a whopper. She was ticked off at people downloading music, so she leaked fake tracks?

Mr. Pop History – It’s a great story from 2003 and shows just how the Internet and the music world can collide.

Fed up – the singer featured tape loops with a profane admonishment to people trying to download cuts from her new “American Life” album. They thought they were getting real songs. That ticked off someone – because her website got hacked with a not-so-kind message scrawled across the front page. Another website – featuring amateur types – took her raw tracks and made dummy Madonna recordings. Thanks mrpopculture.com

Madonna and Guy Ritchie To Split

Ever though their age difference is 10 years, friends believed they were great together. But London’s Sun Newspaper now says otherwise:

“The final straw came before Madonna started her US tour.

“Madonna wanted a highly stage-managed separation, with their split being announced when it was convenient for her.

“She didn’t want the distraction while she is trying to concentrate on her tour.

“But a series of rows around Guy’s 40th birthday last month were so bad that Madge ended up storming out of the house and Guy’s had enough.

“Guy said if they were going to split, it has to be now — and their marriage will finally be over in a matter of weeks.

“Madonna was dithering at first about whether a separation would be best or whether to go ahead with the divorce.

“She has now agreed with Guy that a divorce is the best thing to do.”
