The statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in California rose to an all-time high Monday(Oct.8), the third record-setting day in a row that is prompting calls for a federal investigation into the price spike. The average price in the state hit $4.668, according to AAA. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate, saying residents need to be protected from "malicious trading schemes."Spokesmen for the FTC in Washington didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Monday the "worst-case scenarios" were now playing out in Syria and Turkey would do everything necessary to protect itself, as its army fired back for a sixth day after a shell from Syria flew over the border. Gul said the violence in Turkey's southern neighbor, where a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad has evolved into a civil war that threatens to draw in regional powers, could not go on indefinitely and Assad's fall was inevitable.

The United States has sent military troops to the Jordan-Syria border to help build a headquarters in Jordan and bolster that country's military capabilities in the event that violence escalates along its border with Syria, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday. Speaking at a NATO conference of defense ministers in Brussels, Panetta said the U.S. has been working with Jordan to monitor chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria and also to help Jordan deal with refugees pouring over the border from Syria. 

The Spanish government's dilemma over whether to request a European bailout has become more acute following a downgrade of the cash-strapped country's credit rating. Standard & Poor's cut its rating on Spain's debt by two notches to BBB- late Wednesday, leaving the country on the cusp of junk status, or non-investment grade. That could make it more expensive for the Spanish government to borrow money as it might scare some of its bond investors away.

Unemployment in Greece hit a record high of 25.1 percent in July as the country's financial crisis continues to exact its heavy toll, official figures showed Thursday. And all indications are that unemployment in Greece will be heading higher for some to come. The country is widely-predicted to enter a sixth year of a recession, that's already seen economic output slump by a quarter and youth unemployment push way above 50 percent.

The 40-foot boat the Neptune hit an unknown object in the bay Friday night, leaving it with a 1-foot gash, Petty Officer Pamela Boehland said. The craft began taking on water and sinking, she said. But a Coast Guard boat happened to be nearby, taking on board most of the Neptune's 22 passengers and crew and summoning another Coast Guard vessel that picked up the rest.

Denver police are reviewing video footage from city surveillance cameras after a shot was fired through the window of President Barack Obama's campaign office. Cameras are in the area of the campaign office on West Ninth Avenue near Acoma Street near Denver's downtown, and investigators are poring over the tapes for any leads. She did not release any other information, citing an "active, ongoing investigation."

Bullying Story – October 8, 2012

Canada was in uproar Friday over a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was found dead, an apparent suicide, five weeks after she uploaded a video to YouTube describing years of bullying that drove her to drugs and alcohol. Coroner Barb McLintock said Thursday night that preliminary indications suggest the British Columbia girl, Amanda Todd, killed herself. Her school district's spokeswoman, Cheryl Quinton, confirmed the girl in the video was her. In the 9-minute video posted on Sept. 7, the 10th-grader and cheerleader didn't speak but told her story in haunting detail in a series of handwritten notes that she held up to the camera.


 Health/Medical – Meningitis Update – October 8, 2012

The number of deaths from fungal meningitis linked to steroid injections has risen to 11, up from the eight deaths reported yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Two of the new deaths were reported in Tennessee, bringing the number of fatalities there to six. The other was reported Michigan, bringing that state's total to three. The number of reported cases of fungal meningitis rose to 119, from the 105 cases reported as of yesterday, the CDC said. Tennessee has the most cases, with 39. For the first time, a case was reported in New Jersey, which now joins Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia in reporting cases of the fungal infection.

Judge John Cleland delivered the sentence here in a packed courtroom of the Centre County Courthouse. Sandusky was found guilty in June of 45 counts of sexually molesting 10 boys over a 15-year period.The maximum sentence was 442 years. Sandusky has currently served 112 days.

Passing - Alex Karras, who gained fame in the NFL as a fearsome defensive lineman and later as an actor, has died. He was 77. Craig Mitnick, Karras' attorney, said Karras died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, surrounded by family. Karras had been suffering from dementia. He was among the more than 3,500 NFL players suing the league regarding the treatment of head injuries.

Great Finish - Yankees – Ibanez homers twice - Raul Ibanez first pinch hits for Alex Rodriquex and tied the game with a bottom-of-the-ninth home run. Alex Rodriguez had another good view from the dugout three innings later when Ibanez homered to win it. Saved by manager Joe Girardi's gutsy move - and Ibanez's big swings - the New York Yankees rallied for a stunning 3-2 win in the 12th over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five AL division series.

Alex Rodriquez  watched the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 of the AL division series against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

Aaron Rodgers  of the Green Bay Packers  set a career high and tied a franchise record with six touchdown passes and the Packers played their best game of their so far inconsistent season, beating previously unbeaten Houston 42-24 on Sunday night.

Pirate101," the follow-up to the popular, free online kids' game "Wizard101," is launching to the general public on Oct. 15, after having given access to paying players Monday. The game from KingsIsle Entertainment lets players take on the role of an orphan pirate who recruits a crew and adventures and combats his way through a virtual world where ships sail the sky. Fred Howard, vice president of marketing at KingsIsle, said "Pirate101" may have more of an appeal to an older audience than its predecessor. While the wizard was a hero on his journey, "Pirate" is more of a redemption story, he said.

 Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos confirmed on Thursday that the online retailer sells its Kindle e-reader "at cost", with profit coming instead from sales of online content.Bezos' remarks, in an interview with the BBC, marked the first time the company had confirmed long-held Wall Street assumptions that it did not make a profit on sales of the popular tablet.

The insinuation, which Welch doubled down on after the fact, was that the president wanted to make the economy look healthier than it actually is heading into the November election.

David Siegel, the owner of Westgate Resorts, sent a surprising email to his employees Monday(Oct.8). It said that if President Barack Obama wins re-election and raises Siegel's taxes, he will have to lay off workers and downsize his company - or even shut it down."If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company," he wrote. "Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

Kellogg's cereal recalls boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite size products that may have metal mesh fragments in them.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the recall is "due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part."

She is scheduled to appear on a float promoting pet adoption in the upcoming Rose Parade.

Passing - Sammi Kane Kraft, the real-life baseball player who portrayed Amanda Whurlitzer in the 2005 remake of Bad News Bears, died in a car accident in Los Angeles. She was only 20. 

Russell Crowe and wife Danielle Spencer who have been married for nine years, are calling it quits.

A Russian appeals court on Wednesday(Oct.10) upheld the two-year jail sentences handed down to two members of punk band Pussy Riot for a protest against Vladimir Putin in a cathedral but freed a third member by suspending her sentence. A Moscow City Court judge said the court was leaving the sentences in place for Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, and issuing a suspended sentence for Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30.
