In The News

hurricane sandy update bulletin mrpopculture nov 1 2012 Death toll is up as At least 95 people in North America died in the superstorm and officials said the count could climb higher as rescuers searched house-to-house through coastal towns.   New Yorkers awoke to the rumble of subway trains for the first time in four days on Thursday and the death toll continued to rise from the former hurricane Sandy, one of the biggest and most devastating storms ever to hit the United States. Lines formed at gas stations amid fuel shortages around the U.S. Northeast and emergency utility crews struggled to reach the worst hit areas and restore power to millions of people.

Four people have been shot and wounded during a Halloween party on the University of Southern California campus. Capt. David Carlisle of the USC Department of Public Safety says two people were detained following the shooting shortly before midnight Wednesday(Oct.31). Los Angeles police say the four victims were rushed to hospitals after the shooting at Tutor Campus Center. There was no immediate word on their conditions.

Barack Obama put politics aside and Republican challenger Mitt Romney tempered his criticism of the president for three days as superstorm Sandy battered the U.S. East Coast, but both will dive back into the presidential campaign with gusto on Thursday, with just five days left until Election Day. Obama and Romney are locked in a race so tight that both campaigns are predicting victory. However, the polls show Obama with a slight edge in nine key "battleground" states that are neither reliably Republican nor Democratic.

bloomberg backs obama nov 2012 news date mrpopcultureNew York Mayor Michael Bloomberg backed President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney on Thursday, saying the incumbent Democrat will bring critically needed leadership to fight climate change after the East Coast devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy – Seems that Staten Island has some real problems. 19 are dead, including two boys – taken away by a water surge while their mom tried to hold on to them in their SUV. The two bodies have been found in a marsh. Damage is everywhere and – officials have been slower to respond to the area.  Garbage is piling up, a stench hangs in the air and mud-caked mattresses and couches line the streets. Residents are sifting through the remains of their homes, searching for anything that can be salvaged. "We have hundreds of people in shelters," said James Molinaro, the borough's president. "Many of them, when the shelters close, have nowhere to go because their homes are destroyed. These are not homeless people. They're homeless now."

Under enormous pressure from a city in distress, New York City Marathon officials decided late Friday afternoon to cancel the race less than two days before it was scheduled to begin. The announcement came only a few hours after Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended his decision to keep the marathon scheduled for Sunday. Bloomberg called the annual event a way to show "solidarity" with the millions affected by Hurricane Sandy, many of whom still remain without power and plumbing several days after the storm devastated the region.

Just two days from the finish, President Barack Obama's campaign is mobilizing a massive get-out-the-vote effort aimed at carrying the Democrat to victory, as Republican Mitt Romney makes a late play for votes in Democratic-leaning Pennsylvania.Obama was closing out the campaign with an apparent edge in some key battleground states, including Ohio. But both campaigns were predicting wins in Tuesday's election.

The tea party, at least its widespread influence on Republican congressional candidates, "is over," declared the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party group charged with electing Democrats to the House. "House Republican incumbents—and their candidates—are running as far away from the Tea Party as they can," "Regardless of whether [Republicans] win or lose, the Tea Party of 2010 is over...”

Workplace Shooting – Three Dead In Fresno - Deliberately and methodically, a Fresno meat-processing plant employee shot four of his co-workers -- two fatally -- before killing himself Tuesday morning. Lawrence Jones, a 42-year-old with a long trail of criminal convictions, walked up to three of his victims, placed a handgun to each man's head or neck and fired. The noise of the plant, where many employees wear ear protection, might have left them and others unaware of the slayings in their midst, police say.

Obama Wins - President Barack Obama claimed a second term from an incredibly divided electorate and immediately braced for daunting challenges and progress that comes only in fits and starts. "We have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come," Obama said.

Technology news – November 1, 2012

Hit with rising cable bills and a weak economy, more Americans, especially young adults and lower-income families, are catching their shows using classic antennas. Nearly 18 percent of all US households with TVs are watching old-fashioned broadcasts delivered for free over the airwaves, up from 15 percent of homes last year, according to research firm GfK Media. That means 20.7 million homes, or roughly 54 million consumers, now get channels over the air instead of paying a monthly cable or satellite bill. Despite all the talk about “cord cutting” and people watching shows online, this marks the first year since the recession that the firm has seen a notable uptick in broadcast-only viewers, as sustained unemployment takes a toll on household budgets.
