President Nixon says he would allow the present 90-day freeze on wages, prices
and rents to expire November 13, but pledged his administration would take “all
steps needed” to fight inflation.

hostages are slain by inmates
and 28 convicts are killed by
gunfire when 1,700 state
troopers, national guardsmen
and sheriff’s deputies storm the
Attica Correctional Facility to
end one of the bloodiest revolts
in the nation’s prison annals.
Dies - Nikita S. Khrushchev (77)
of a massive heart attack. The
former Soviet Premier was
stripped of his posts both as
head of the government and of
the Soviet Communist Party on October 15, 1964 and has since lived in
obscurity.

Pier Angeli
(39) ex-wife
of Vic Damone. Angeli starred in several
films in the 50’s - “The Story of Three
Lovers,” Theresa,” and “The Silver
Chalice.” The actress died of an
anaphylatic shock after being given a
tranquilizer by her doctor.
Black Panther leader Huey Newton
announces that the black militant
organization is moving its headquarters
from Oakland to Atlanta. The party was
founded five years ago by Newton and
Bobby Seale, the party chairman. In
Oakland, Police Chief Charles Gains
said, “If he (Newton) thinks Atlanta would be a better place, I wholeheartedly
agree with him. My congratulations to Atlanta.”

Jerry Lewis raises $8,125,337 in his annual muscular dystrophy telethon. The
event was carried on 121 stations. Last year, the telethon raised just over $5
million.
Marriage announcement - actor Peter Lawford (48) to Mary Rowan (21). Mary is
the daughter of Dan Rowan of “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.” Rowan said, “I’ve
known Peter a long time and he is a nice man. Mary and Peter are very much in
love and I wish them well...I wish he were nearer her age than mine.” The couple
plans to marry October 31.
Ralph Nader
charges that the Volkswagen Beetle is so
loaded with safety hazards that production should be
stopped as soon as possible. He said most of the
defects could have been corrected by the manufacturer
with items costing less than $20 a car. Other hazards,
such as the little car’s sensitivity to crosswinds and its
tendency to roll over cannot be corrected in the current
Beetle design. Volkswagen maintains that their
products “meet or exceed all safety standards and are
providing millions of owners with safe, dependable and
economical transportation.”
In sports, St Louis Cardinal third baseman
Joe Torre
is named National League player of the month by a
panel of writers and broadcasters in the league’s
monthly poll. Torre, has led the league in hitting most
of the season, batted .368 last month.

Francisco rock
band Quicksilver Messenger Service are
fined and one receives a jail term on
charges of marijuana possession. David
Freiburg (32) was fined $500 and
sentenced to two months jail. Band
member George Bonney (24) was fined $200 and given two-years’ probation.

Both were arrested while trying to board a plane to Hawaii last November. Know
mainly for album sales, the band’s biggest hit so far was “Fresh Air” from
November of last year (have another hit...of fresh air).
Mary Travers
, formally of Peter, Paul & Mary, performs
solo for the first time in 10 years. Performing in
Vancouver, B.C., Mary said, “I Love It, I’ve had to grow, to
learn new things.” Travers is married to publisher Gerald
Taylor and has four children.
