President Nixon receives a warm welcome as he motorcaded six miles through
the streets of Madrid.
President Nixon confers with his two top Vietnam negotiators in discussions
aimed at moving the stalled Paris peace talks forward. They are Ambassador
David Bruce and Philip Habib.
Abdel Nasser is buried after a four-hour procession through the center of Cairo
during which interim President Anwar Sadat himself suffered a heart attack! Also
onetime Premier Ali Sabri was also stricken. Both are under medical treatment.

President Nixon returns from his nine-day European
visit and tells the American people that world leaders
have confidence the U.S. does not threaten the

A chartered airplane carrying members of the Wichita
state University football team crashes in the Colorado
Rockies, killing 29 - including 13 football players.
Mansion trial - Charles Manson and three female defendants are removed from
the courtroom when they sang and chanted, and called the judge a girl.
Chaos in Honolulu - About 150 to 200 students went on a drug-induced rampage
at a rural high school throwing the campus into chaos. The trouble was at
Waianae high school.
The unemployment rate jumps to 5.5%.
The number of children on welfare rolls climbs at a pace of 25% in a single year
and passes the 6 million mark.

Janis Joplin
(27) is found dead in the bedroom of her
Hollywood motel apartment, Police say the singer’s
friends had become concerned when they found her
car parked near the Landmark Motel on Franklin Ave,
but received no answer to calls on the house
telephone. The cause of death was not immediately
known, but she had frequently expressed doubt about
the condition of her health and had been known to
consume a quart of liquor onstage during concerts.
Later, it’s announced that Ms. Joplin died of an
overdose of drugs. Police said her arms were
punctured by numerous hypodermic needle marks. The
marks on her left arm were fresh. There were
quantities of tequila, vodka and wine. He body was
wedged between a bed and a nightstand. She was clad
in a short nightgown. Her death comes less than a

month after rocker Jim Hendrix, also 27, died. He suffocated from vomiting while
unconscious.
In Washington -
Jim Hendrix
is buried in a
simple ceremony, a marked contrast with his
frenzied style of electronic happenings.
Hendrix’ father, James said he had conferred
with promoters who told him a massive rock
funeral, featuring many big name stars could
not be arranged on short notice. The
pallbearers were friends from Hendrix’
boyhood days when he dropped out of high
school to join the Army and later to pursue a
musical career that led him to England.

John Wayne’s first TV special will be titled
“Swing Out, Sweet Land” - and will be a look
at American history from the Jamestown settlement in 1670 through the 20
th
century. It’ll also have star power such as Lucille Ball and Bob Hope. It airs
November 29.
