Week of May 1, 1970
President Nixon orders several thousand American troops into Cambodia to wipe
out the “headquarters” for the entire Communist military operation in South
Vietnam. He stressed in a speech that this was not an invasion of Cambodia.
President Nixon agrees to meet with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
which is trying to find a means of halting U.S. military operations in Cambodia.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird warns he would recommend a renewal of
bombing of North Vietnam if the Communists respond to U.S. actions in
Cambodia by “significant” invasion or infiltrations across their boundary with
South Vietnam.
Vietnam - U.S. Air Force bombers wipe out part of the Cambodian rubber
plantation town of Mimot after Army helicopters were fired on by North
Vietnamese troops.
Four students are shot to death on
the Kent State University campus
when national guardsmen, believing
a sniper had attacked them, fired into
a crowd of rioting antiwar protesters.
At least 11 were wounded before
order was restored. The town of Kent
was sealed off and a judge ordered
the university’s 20,000 students to
leave the campus by noon the next
day.
One of the dead victims was Sandy Lee Scheuer
(20), who was talking to a speech therapy class at
Kent State when hit by the rifle bullet that killed
her
Kent State wake - In California, Gov
Ronald Reagan asks the University of
California and the state colleges to
shut down through Sunday.

45 arrests made during a weekend of protest on Yale University’s historic
green include peacemakers as well as militants from a half-dozen states.
Bernice Sandler - a leader of the national women’s equal education rights group
files charges forbidding government contractors to discriminate by sex. “The
orders never had been used this way in the past, but we were watching what the
blacks were doing and we came across a footnote that the orders had been
extended to include sex.”
Music news - Now at bookstores - “The Nashville
Sound” by Paul Hemphill. “The music, the people who
write, play and sing it, and the men who made it great,
from Jimmie Rodgers through the legendary Hank
Williams right up to
Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Merle Haggard and such
converts from folk and folk rock as Bob Dylan.”
Passing - Famed West coast DJ Al Jarvis (60) after a
second heart attack.
Speakers at the Supermarket Market Institute
convention in Houston describe the typical
supermarket 10 years from now as “customized,”
“more personable” or “a no-nonsense” shopping
machine to move merchandise as efficiently as possible.” Said one speaker -
“We are going to customize stores to fit different income levels, different ethnic
groups.”

Hollywood news - Passing - Inger Stevens (34)
shortly after she was found lying semiconscious on
the kitchen floor of her Hollywood Hills home. She
was still alive when she was found clad in a
negligee by her roommate… from an overdose of
sleeping pills. On June 1, she was to begin filming
a new TV adventure series for ABC-TV “The Most
Deadly Game” with Ralph Bellamy and George
Maharis.

Lesley warren is cast as a regular member of the Mission:
Impossible IMF Force. She’ll portray a top female agent in the
popular series.
The Men From Shiloh will be the new name of “The Virginian”
seen on NBC-TV. The twist will be the newest trend in television - the series will
rotate three productions as in “The Bold Ones” and “Name of the Game.” All
three programs are produced by Universal.

schedule by NBC, after his arrest earlier this week in London for possession of
marijuana.
