The Supreme Court bars from the draft as conscientious objectors men opposed
only to the Vietnam War, not all wars.
South Vietnamese headquarters reports the destruction of 100 enemy tanks in
the month-old drive into Laos that has cut nine major branches of North
Vietnam’s vital Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Ranking officers say the month-old South Vietnamese invasion of Laos is already
as successful as last year’s joint campaign into Cambodia.
President Anwar Sadat of Egypt proclaims the end of the cease-fire and truce
with Israel. He declared Russia had the support of his decision.
Jane Fonda urges support for a massive spring peace mobilization to end the
war in Southeast Asia and end poverty, racism and sexism at home.
President Nixon condemns publicity seekers who exploit the nation’s courts and
urges Americans “to play the game according to the rules.” “The vast majority of
Americans are grateful to those judges who insist on order in their courts and
who will not be bullied or stampeded by those who hold in contempt al this
nation’s judicial system stands for.”
The Senate approves to raise Social Security benefits 10% and to increase
payroll taxes on jobs paying more than $7,800 a year.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield of Montana says he had been advised
that Soviet troops have withdrawn from surface-to-air missiles sites along the
Suez Canal, leaving advisers behind but Egyptians in charge.

Passing - Walter W. Ralphs - pioneer in the development of the modern
supermarket - and one of three family shareholders who incorporated Ralphs
Grocery Co in 1909. He was 86.
In A Gallup Poll - Long hair is winning the battle over short hair. 54% of men on
campus sport longer hair with 45% sticking to the traditional shorter hairstyle.

over Muhammad Ali in New
York. Ali was forced to take a
mandatory eight count in the

round after Frazier
knocked him down with a left
hook. Ali’s jaw was swollen
on the right side almost
beyond recognition and he
merely got dressed, walked to
his limo and was driven to a
hospital. He later said he was
glad he didn’t get knocked-out. Frasier said he was willing to give Ali a rematch
anytime, “but I don’t think he wants one.”

Technology -
The MCI Lockheed Satellite Corp. proposes to build and operate a domestic
satellite communications system that would cost $168 million. The company said
the network could be in operation by 1975 to provide television relay and
business and data communications, including telephone, electronical special
delivery of mail and other services through 50 states. Meantime, RCA proposes
to build and operate a $198 million domestic satellite system for all 50 states and
Puerto Rico.
Acting on complaints about songs that promote the use of illegal drugs, the FCC
warns broadcasters that hey have a responsibility to be aware of the lyrics of

records they play over the air. The commission says the failure of a station to
know the contents of a song’s lyrics would raise “serious questions as to whether
continued operation of the station is in the public interest.”
Time-Life Video, the pre-recorded television division of Time Inc, will offer
subscribers selections of outstanding programs for new cartridge and cassette
video players. Time-Life editors will produce and select the programming in a
wide range of categories from movie classics and children’s programming to
home education.
