Ernakulam, India - Since July 1,
more than 26,000 men were
sterilized by vasectomy in the first
half of a month-long family planning
festival - the largest ever held in
India. An official says they hope to
sterilize 50,000 men by the end of
the month. Ninety doctors working
in two shifts perform the
vasectomies in 50 operating cubicles set up on the floor of an auditorium.
Operations begin at 9am and continuing well into the night.
Britain’s Conservative government announces major cuts in sales taxes and lifts
all restrictions on installment buying in an effort to boost the country’s sagging
economy.
An editorial in the North Vietnamese Communist Party newspaper Nhan Dan
says Hanoi will not accept any peace agreement for the Vietnam War that
President Nixon might work out with the Red Chinese during his visit to Peking.
“Nixon’s policy also consists of trying to achieve a compromise between the big
powers in an attempt to make smaller countries bow to their arrangements.”
Meanwhile, the South Vietnamese government proposes
Initial cease-fire and reunification of North and South Vietnam by means of
general elections. The White says that Nixon hopes to make his visit to Mainland
China well before the May deadline he set as he reveals the plan this week.
Hoax in the National Review ? Smiling - William F.
Buckley , Editor of the National Review said that
publication of so-called secret Vietnam documents
was a hoax. Buckley said the documents were
composed by editors of the magazine “ex nihilo” - out
of nothing. Buckley said the intended purpose of the
hoax, was to demonstrate in regard to the earlier
Pentagon papers “that the Pentagon and the CIA are
not composed of incompetents ... that forged
documents would be widely accepted as genuine
provided their content was inherently plausible ... that
the challenge in Southeast Asia was an aspect of the global challenge to the
West, not a local affair.”

Week of July 16, 1971
Broadway news - “ Fiddler
on the Roof ” becomes the
longest-running musical on
Broadway (so far). This week
passes the 2,845th time on
Broadway, one more than
“Hello Dolly.” “Life With Father” is the longest-running play on Broadway to date -
with 8, 224 performances.
Marry - Lucie Desiree Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Phillip
Vandervort Menegaux on her 20th birthday.
Passing - “ Ukulele Ike ” (76) - Clifford
Edwards - voice of Jiminy Cricket. His
version of “When You Wish Upon A Star”
sold millions, but Edwards was penniless
on his deathbed. The song was heard
week in and week out on “Disney’s
Wonderful World of Color” on NBC-TV.
The song won an Academy award in
1940. All in all, he appeared in 106 other
movies and sold 74 million records. At
death, no one really knew who he was
and his body sat at the morgue. Hospital attendants said he had no visitors and
listed no next of kin. His name, Clifford Edwards, struck no memory chord.
Sports- Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants,
blasts his 13th grand slam to break a 4-4 tie in the ninth
inning in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. What a
game! Final score 8-4.

At the bookstore - “ Grapefruit” by Yoko Ono . She
describes it her book as conveying her “instructions” to
others to help them help themselves. “It is instructions for
additional acts to make it easier to live. I find it difficult to
live, just ordinary living. At one point for instance, I had to
go to a party of artists. I didn’t want to but I had to. So I tied
one leg up, used a crutch and went as a cripple. Everybody
said ‘Hi, what happened to your leg?’ and talked about that
instead of about me.” She writes on the book jacket “burn
this book after you’ve read it.” The reason she says is
because by then, you should be working out your own
instructions to fit your needs.

Week of July 16, 1971
Music news - Donovan moves to Warner
Brothers Records. He had been with Epic
since 1966 ... Rare Earth joins Sly & The
Family Stone at Madison Square Garden
in September...Sweathog joins the Black
Sabbath tour... The Bee Gees are set to
tour the United States beginning July 28.
First stop is Nashville’s Municipal
Auditorium, then on to Philadelphia,
Atlantic City and New York.
Pop music lesson - What we have been calling music videos since the 80’s are
called “featurettes” at this time in pop history. One company producing these
music videos (actually on film) is a company called the Film Factory out of
Hollywood. This week, Gene Weed from the Film Factory is producing a
featurette with the Motown group “Lodi” and their new single “Happiness.” Gene
Weed himself was a disc jockey on KFWB in Hollywood.
Pop Artists - Cat Stevens is unstoppable these days
- both in singles and albums. Did you know he
originally wrote the hit “Wild World” in the form of a
father warning his daughter about the dangers she
might face as she leaves home? In “Hard Headed
Woman” - he writes about the kind of slick polish
people in the record industry. Stevens (22) came to
pop fame early in England and says he wasn’t ready
for it. “I got into the environment too early. I lost sight
of what I really wanted. I think part of it was being
idolized by all the girls. I was smoking too much, drinking too much and
constantly worrying - that was one of the worst things - so I ended up in the
hospital (landing in a sanitarium for three months with tuberculosis).
Radio news - “American Top 40” with Casey Kasem is
seeing growth in stations, ratings and revenues. Produced
by Watermark in Hollywood, the show debuted a year ago
this month with seven stations. As of this week, some 140
stations carry the three-hour countdown show. The
program is offered on a cash basis to stations (depending
on their rate card) and is breaking even. The producers
believe it will be a cash cow soon.

Week of July 16, 1971
More radio news - Francis Gary Powers - famed U-2 spy
plane pilot shot down while flying over the Soviet Union in
1960 is hired by radio station KGIL (1260) near Hollywood
to become a pilot-traffic reporter.
For the first time - non-commercial television (PBS) will use
commercials on the three networks to promote its fall
season. Look for them on CBS, NBC and ABC. It’s also the
first time one network has accepted commercials
advertising programs on another network. The campaign calls for the expenditure
of $700,000 and will also include the placement of ads in newspapers of the 10
largest television markets.
Television news - The Lawrence Welk Show is leaving
ABC after 16 years on the network. But, the 68-year-old
bandleader is not quitting. He’s lined-up his own ad-hoc
network to syndicate the show, so it will still be produced.
Some say he’s keeping it for the love of the business and
he’s thinking about the welfare of those he and the show
employ. Even after he quits, he says he has good people
to take over things: “Many years ago, I decided I didn’t
want to hire stars. I wanted to build them. Today, I see a
tremendous amount of good in that concept. I truly believe that if I could put my
system, my training program that we have used in our orchestra, in practice
elsewhere, I could be of great help in saving our free enterprise system. This is
my motivation. I think our young people have been terribly misled. We have tried
to give them life, instead of letting them earn it. And it doesn’t work that way.”
TV host shot/guest slain - Merri Dee - host of her
own television show on WSNS (channel 44) in
Chicago and a guest she had on her show earlier,
are shot in her parked Lincoln, near the studio. He
was a salesman who professed skills at mind
reading and palmistry. Both were shot in the head.
He died later. (Merri Dee would later move to WGN).
