A federal grand jury in Boston investigates possible criminal charges against the
Washington Post, the New York Times and the Boston Globe for publishing
secret Pentagon documents relating to the Vietnam War. Parts of the 47-volume
Pentagon study ended up in possession of the New York Times and were leaked
to the other papers.
After narrowly escaping an attempt on
his life, Morocco’s King Hussein
ridicules the plotters as “infantile” and
said the 10 leaders of the coup will be
executed within 24 hours. In the coup,
about 200 noncommissioned officer
cadets stormed his birthday reception,
killing 28 dead and injuring 33.
500 say their last goodbyes to Jazz great
Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong in Queens,
NY. Among those attending were Ella
Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Benny
Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Carson, Guy Lombardo, Mrs Nelson
Rockefeller. Peggy Lee sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” The 40-minute service was
broadcast to 16 nations via Telstar. Armstrong died Tuesday; he was 71.
Surgeon General Dr. Jesse Steinfeld lists cigarette
smoking as the nation’s #1 health problem in front of drug
abuse.
Bill Cosby says that he will not accept an award from the
Philadelphia Convention and Tourist Bureau because of
“personal concern” over the city’s decision to eliminate
athletics from public schools. The award he was supposed
to receive is presented annually to a person bringing
prestige and favorable publicity to city. Cosby is from the
area, excelling in track at Fitzsimons Junior High and Germantown High School.
The 25th Old-Timers day is held at Yankee Stadium
featuring Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra,
Johnny Mize, Charlie Keller, Tommy Henrich, Billy
Martin, Whitey Ford, Phil Rizzuto, Hank Bauer, Lefty
