Week of December 26, 1971
Vietnam - American planes are waging a bombing blitzkrieg on North Vietnam
for the fifth day. Many believe it’s the heaviest bombing since 1968.
Richard Nixon said recently that he never watches himself on television. “I
strongly advise young political people: ‘don’t watch yourself on television. You
may become self-conscious.”
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird accuses North
Vietnam of four violations of the 1968 “understandings”
with Hanoi that led President Lyndon Johnson’s
administration to halt U.S. bombing of the north.
Rescue workers recover more bodies from a plush 22-
story downtown hotel in Seoul that was gutted by fire
Christmas day. Death toll is at least 142.
President Nixon reluctantly signs a 13-week extension
for some 700,000 to get unemployment pay.
In Zurich, Muhammad Ali knocks-out West Germany’s Juergen Blin with a
powerful right cross at 2:12 of the 7 th round of the scheduled 12-round
heavyweight bout.
In demand - the new Eisenhower silver dollar. The U.S. mint sold out of 11
million special Ike dollars priced at $3 and $10 each in little over three months,
this despite a quota of five per person.
Radio - Louisville dj Gary Burbank of WAKY radio passed
out on the air after downing three-quarters of a fifth of whiskey
during a 2 ½-hour radio broadcast Burbank said he wanted to
demonstrate the effects of alcohol as a warning to citizens to
limit their drinking during the New Year’s holiday. Gary said he
received a few calls from local bars asking him to come in for
a last drink.

Game show history, its packaging and selling will be discussed by game show
vets Chuck Barris, Dennis James, Mont Hall, Jack Barry And Ralph Andrews on
the “Game Show Show” over PBS this week.

The Sonny and Cher variety hour is added to the regular
CBS schedule on Monday of this week. There seemed to be
little doubt that CBS would add the show, after its
summertime tryout.

Silent Years - D.W. Griffith’s “Intolerance” is presented.
