Rioting continues in Poland, according to Radio Warsaw. Reports said that 150
militiamen were wounded in the clashes and an unspecified number of persons
were killed. Later, Party Chief Wladyslaw Gomulka, who rose to power almost 15
years ago, is ousted. The rioting is due to strikes and worker protests in the
shipping cities along the nation’s Baltic coastline.
A House-Senate conference committee gives the automobile industry until Jan.
1, 1975 to come up with a virtually pollution-free car.
Hundreds of workers are hit with low-level radiation after an A-Test explosion in
the Nevada desert. No one was killed.
Charles Manson along with followers Bruce Davis and
Steve Grogan are indicted for the murder of
Donald
(
Shorty) Shea
. Shea, a husky bouncer, horse wrangler
and western character actor has been missing for nearly
15 months. Manson is currently on trial on seven counts
of murder in the Tate-La Bianca killings last year. He
and Davis also were indicted last April in the murder of
musician Gary Hinman in July 1969.
A fire sweeps through the upper floors of Tucson’s Pioneer International Hotel,
killing 28.
North Vietnam releases an “official” list of 368 names of American prisoners of
war, and the U.S. government immediately reacts “is that all there is?” Secretary
of Defense Melvin Laird said that there were no new names on the list and that
“all of the names listed have been reported previously through unofficial
channels.”
In the last of the war crime trials, Nazi
Franz Stangl
is
sentenced to life in prison for the death of 400,000 Jews
during WWII. Stangl commanded the Treblinka facility in
Poland.
Sports, Don Shula’s Miami Dolphins are at 9 wins and 4
losses. No one thought the team would be a contender at
the beginning of the season. Shula says, “We’re an
aggressive team. We never stop coming and this year we’ve
been able to win that way. We have so many rookies and
other new players that we can’t possibly remember the
plays” (Miami has around 18 new players and 11 of them

Rod Serling
is back to series
TV, this time with “Night Gallery.” Since “The Twilight
Zone” was canceled, he had written several TV
specials and movies including the first “Planet of the
Apes” and Stanley Kramer’s “R.P.M.” He’s currently
adapting the Irving Wallace novel, “The Man” for
ABC-TV films. He also wants to work on his first play
for the legitimate theater.
Gov. Lester Maddox walks off the Dick Cavett show
saying the talk show host had insulted the people of Georgia by calling them
bigots. The angry exchange took place with 10 minutes to go in a taping of the
program. The audience heard Cavett say the following: “Mr. Jim Brown asked
you if you had any trouble with your white admirers.” “He did not say admirers,”
Maddox said. “No, he said bigots,” Cavett responded. Maddox then demanded
Cavett apologize for allegedly calling his admirers and the 4 million people of
Georgia bigots. “No I won’t” said Cavett.
After 11 years as Robbie Douglas, actor
Don Grady
calls it quits for “My Three Sons.” “There comes a time
when you have to cut loose and it looks like this is it for
me. I want to drop out a while, I want to reassess the
whole scene. I don’t even know that acting is where my
head is. I’ve been at it all my life, but I don’t know that’s
really where I want to go.”

, star of ABC’s “Nanny and the
Professor” will join Chris Schenkel as co-
commentator of the Sugar Bowl Parade on New
Year’s day.
Television/music - Diana Ross will star in the first
television special produced by Motown
Productions, the TV-theatrical branch of Motown
Records, early next year. “Diana” will feature Bill
Cosby, the Jackson 5 and Danny Thomas.
In addition, Motown is creating and producing one
or two 90-minute made-for-TV original movies for
ABC-TV.
Frank Sinatra will be featured on Dean Martin’s
New Year’s Eve show. Also appearing - Ruth Buzzi and Kay Medford.
