Iraqi cleric Muqtada Sadr orders his militia to stand down – lay down their weapons and offers Shiite Muslims a way out of six days of fighting that has left more than 350 dead.

Baghdad - Tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims march to protest a crackdown on Shiite militiamen.  

Iraqi security forces launch a major crackdown against militiamen in the southern oil hub of Basra.

 Vice President Dick Cheney charges that Iran is trying to develop weapons-grade uranium, though international inspectors and U.S. intelligence services have not found evidence of such an effort.

Sen. John McCain, calls for stronger ties with allies and cautions that American power “does not mean we can do whatever we want, whenever we want.”
