Six U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter are killed after a roadside bomb detonates in Baghdad. Later – six suspected militants thought to have smuggled those roadside bombs from Iran are captured in northeast Baghdad.

CIA efforts to hunt down Osama bin laden have helped track an increase of Al Qaeda operatives and money into Pakistan’s tribal territories – according to intelligence sources. 

The Senate launches debate on a bipartisan immigration bill with opponents protesting the way the measure was written. Republicans say they want to eliminate the bill’s provision that would allow illegal immigrants to gain citizenship. Meanwhile President Bush asserts that the bill would settle the status of illegal immigrants without granting them amnesty.

President Bush picks Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute as war czar.

A suicide bomber blows himself up in a hotel restaurant in Pakistan, killing 22.

The ship Cutty Sark, the British maritime landmark is damaged after an early-morning fire that destroyed much of its deck and planking.


Business News – May 15, 2007

Discovery Communications says it plans to close its 103 retail stores. It’s the same media company with its own channel and Animal Planet. Plans include selling its merchandise through other retail outlets such as “Toys R Us.”


Technology News – May  15, 2007

Microsoft says it will buy online advertising firm AQuantive Inc for $6 billion in cash. It’s the last of the large and independently owned entities that focus on web advertising.

Amazon says it will open a digital music store, but unlike ITunes, customers can do anything they want after purchasing a song. In other words – no restricted copying. Look for it this fall.

Rapid expansion of video offerings on MySpace – The company says it will serve an array of news and entertainment channels on its website.


Sports News – May 15, 2007

 Stanley Cup action – The Anaheim Ducks take the series lead 3-2 with a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

NASCAR takes 100 championship points from Dale Earnhardt Jr. and fines his crew chief $100,000 after finding that his No. 8 Chevy had unauthorized parts before the Nextel Cup race in South Carolina.

 Sylvester Stallone is convicted of importing restricted muscle-building hormones into Australia and is ordered to pay $10,651 in fines and court costs.

He’s everywhere – Jerry Seinfeld is everywhere to promote his animated “Bee Movie.”
