Iraq – Maj, Gen William Caldwell says that a much-touted security crackdown by American and Iraqi forces had failed to reduce violence in the capital and called the results “disheartening.”

11 U.S. troops are killed during a 30-hour period and October is on track to be the deadliest month for Americans in Iraq since the Marines stormed Falouja in November of 2004.

In Sri Lanka – Suicide bombers rams a truck laden with explosives into a Sri Lankan naval bus convoy, killing 97.

Google says its third quarter profit nearly doubled (92)%). Its search query volume grew twice as fast as Yahoo last month. 

Nielsen Media Research says it will launch GamePlay Metrics – designed to give the video game industry a precise system of electronic measurements to standardize the burgeoning market for the buying and selling of ads in its products.

Ebay Inc reports that third-quarter profit increased 10% from the same period last year.

Apple says earnings rose 27% mostly on iPod and sales of Macintosh computers, and the shift this year to use chips made by Intel.

Yahoo sees its net income drop 38% from a year ago.

Yahoo begins showing news clips supplied by 16 CBS televisions providing the Internet’s most trafficked website with another online video magnet. 

 

Entertainment news – October 15, 2006

Actor Wesley Snips is indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of attempting to bilk the federal government out of almost $12 million by filing false tax refund claims.

More Disney – More pop – look for the soundtrack to “The Cheetah Girls 2,” a Disney Channel made-for-TV movie in stores now. The Disney Channel is becoming quite a springboard for young teen talent. The Cheetah Girls franchise began with a series of books written for young girls by Deborah Gregory. That spawned a 2003 made-for-TV movie on the Disney Channel and then a sequel this year. The Cheetah Girls are Kiely Williams, Sabrina Bryan and Adrienne Bailon.

Spring fashions – Justin Timberlake’s William Rast Jeans.

The Gap – a leader in online sales among apparel specialty chains, plans to move beyond its brands to enter shoes with a new website called piperlime – which will include 100 shoe brands.
