MTV Update

Trends – More than ever, MTV is featuring star power – but necessarily from the music world. The channel says it stems from the channel’s audience and its insatiable appetite for celebrities, despite saturation from other media and channels such as E! The latest trend is “at home with” featuring the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and family. This week, the channel debuts Snoop Dogg’s comedy-variety series “Doggy Fizzle Televizzle” and Magic Johnson’s street basketball  show – “Who’s Got Game?” Also, MTV debuts its first late-night talk show with comedian Tom Green and look for another season of Sean P Diddy Combs’ “Making the Band.”

Big launch party for Kind World’s new fall talk show “Living it Up! With Ali & Jack.” He’s ABC journalist Jack Ford and she’s actress-comedian Ali Wentworth, who’s married to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

Another TV trend – Some cable channels are serving-up surveillance/behind the curtain type shows – working lives of paparazzi photogs. E!’s “Celebrity Uncensored” is one.  Look for these offerings this summer:

“The Hollywood Hunt Club” on AMC.

“Red Hot Red Carpet” – VH1

Fox pulls the plug on production of “Cedric The Entertainer” but remaining shows are on the new Fox fall schedule.

MTV Networks plan to relaunch TNN as a men’s channel called “Spike TV.” But there’s a problem – director Spike Lee has launched an injunction for the name change. He won the first round, but the network says it will quickly try to overturn the court order. TNN was once known as “The Nashville Network” but as soon as Viacom bought the channel, the shelved the format and renamed it “The National Network” but it had no personality. Spike Lee claims the public links the name “Spike” with him.

A spin-off of the WB’s “Gillmore Girls” is shelved. The series was to have revolved around character Jess Mariano and his reunion with his estranged dad.

The Sopranos will go into a sixth season. Creator David Chase has agreed to go beyond the planned 5th season and the cast will remain.

“The Orlando Jones Show” debuts on FX late night. He’s been part of Mad TV and comedy films “Double Take,” “Say it Isn’t So” and other projects. He began as a writer-producer on “A Different World.”

For the first time – an “American Idol” runner-up is becoming the bigger star. Clay Aiken hits the best-selling charts with “This Is the Night” – selling almost 400,000 copies in its first week in stores. Champ Ruben Studdard meanwhile is a distant second with his “Flying Without Wings.”
