U.S. warplanes pound a military compound in eastern Afghanistan where intelligence reports – Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network was regrouping. 

Green Beret Nathan Chapman is the first U.S. serviceman to die in Afghanistan – in three months of warfare. 

The 15-year-old student pilot who crashed his plane into a Tampa skyscraper left a brief handwritten note, suggesting he was inspired by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The note sympathized with Osama bin Laden. 

Thirteen more bodies are recovered at the World Trade Center site. Ten were firefighters in what was the main lobby of one of the towers. 

Sen. Eduardo Duhaide is named Argentina’s fifth president in less than two weeks. 

7,000 police officers were on hand along with half-a-million people to welcome the New Year at Times Square. Some officers carried radiation detection equipment.
