President Clinton and key congressional Republicans agree to seek a major change in social Security laws that would allow Americans 65 and older to earn unlimited wages or salary without losing any federal retirement benefits. 

The government announces the biggest-ever trade deficit - some $270 billion last year.

The AFL-CIO, in a dramatic shift, urges amnesty for millions of undocumented workers and the repeal of a law that criminalizes hiring them. 

A new case of “mad cow” disease is detected in France – the seventh since the beginning of the year.

A key physician at the FDA urges the drug Rezulin be withdrawn, saying “preventable live failure” may occur if the diabetes pill remains on the market. Rezulin, which the FDA made one of the fastest-approved prescription drugs over the last decade, has generated $1.8 billion in sales since March 1997. It’s manufactured by Warner-Lambert Co. 

George W. Bush romps to a decisive victory in the South Carolina presidential primary, blunting John McCain and firmly reestablishing his command of the race for the GOP nomination.

As Serbs sang nationalist songs and cheered on their side of the city of Kosovska Mitrovica, NATO troops battled a surging crowd of about 70 thousand ethnic Albanians with tear gas to prevent a potential blood bath.


Technology News – February 15, 2000

Microsoft appeals to Congress to oppose a breakup of the company as talks to settle the government’s landmark antitrust case against the software giant have failed so far to produce the agreement.

Microsoft unveils Windows 2000. The long-awaited program has been three years in the making and cost an estimated $1 billion in development costs. The launch was timed to coincide with a three-day Windows 2000 conference in San Francisco.

Music news – February 15, 2000

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats,” – Broadway’s longest running play, will close on June 25 after a run of almost 20 years. By closing, it will have mounted some 7,397 performances attended by more than 10 million theatergoers. The total gross take will be over $300 million.

Divorce – Diana Ross and husband Arne Neaess. The couple married in 1986 and separated last April.

Two members of the BackStreet Boys say they’re engaged. Kevin Richardson (28) and Brian Littrell (24) told MTV news during a tour stop in Albany, NY.

Dave Letterman (52) returns to his late-night talk show after quintuple bypass surgery. He brought his six doctors and two nurses onstage to thank them for saving his life. Also on the show – Regis Philbin, Foo Fighters and Robin Williams.

NBC renews “3rd Rock From The Sun” for a sixth season.

Against Dave Letterman’s return, Jay Leno featured Howard Stern on the Tonight Show.  

Thursday night’s episode of “ER” on NBC drew 39.4 million viewers making it the most watched episode of entertainment programming since the Seinfeld finale several years ago. 

ABC’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” conquers the new Fox-TV knockoff “Who Wants To Be A Multi-Millionaire in the ratings.  

Courtney Thorne-Smith is leaving Fox’s “Ally McBeal” at the end of the season to pursue he own sitcom.

Former “Roseanne” star John Goodman is getting his own Fox series. The so-far-untitled comedy will center on two mismatched single fathers who share a home together with their teenage kids.
