Microsoft says that it will yank its advertising from websites that fail to state their policy on consumer privacy. The move comes amid widening public concern over the potential misuse of personal information gathered automatically from computer users as they surf the Web.

GoTo.com shares rise 49% after market debut, closing at $22.38. 

AOL says it will make a record $1.5 billion investment in Hughes Electronics and jointly introduces a new consumer offering with Hughes’ DirecTV satellite service.

Robert Downey Jr. is taken to Los Angeles Country jail after admitting during a probation hearing that he had refused a court-ordered drug test.
