First Lady Hilary Clinton and daughter Chelsea’s 12-day trip North Africa gets off to a rocky beginning after an engine in their Air Force Boeing 707 catches fire. After racing down the runway, the jet came to an immediate stop.

The tobacco industry wins a major victory when an Ohio jury cleared the nation’s major cigarette companies of allegations by 14 union health funds that they conspired to suppress information about the hazards of smoking and targeted unsophisticated blue-collar workers with slick marketing campaigns. 

Clinton administration dispatches special envoy Richard Holbrooke to deliver a final warning to Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic that he faces NATO air strikes unless he accepts a peace settlement in Kosovo.

 

Sports News – March 15, 1999

The NFL, responding to a series of embarrassing officiating gaffes that stained the 1998 season, vote to bring back instant replay for 1999. The old replay system, used between 1986 and 1991, relied on an official in the press box to review videotape and make the call, plaguing games with lengthy delays. The new system will allow the referee on the field to view a sideline monitor and he’ll decide to uphold or reverse rulings. 

The International Olympic Committee, attempting to regain public confidence amid the most damaging scandal in its history expels six members for allegedly accepting bribes in connection with the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. Many received cash and/or benefits from Salt Lake City bidders.

O.J. Simpson is returning to commercials in ads for a new lawyer-referral service based in New York. He appears in commercials that urge consumers needing legal representation to dial a toll-free telephone number.

 

Technology News – March 15, 1999

 

Snap.com the venture backed by NBC and CNet unveils the first web portal tailored to computer users with ultra-fast connections (DSL). Snap.com says its new sites tightly integrate video and audio into virtual every web page. For example, Snap.media features a “streaming video” window to present news events.

Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures will spend up to $750 million for as much as 54% of Internet Portal site Go2net. Go2Net’s stock rocketed $26.38 to close at $113.38. 

Internet IPO’s are still running high. This week Priceline.com, an Internet travel company that allows consumers to name their price for plane tickets, disclosed plans to sell 10 million shares in an IP that would raise $80 million. With William Shatner as its spokesperson, the service was launched last April.

Other recent Internet IPO’s – Cheap Tickets and IVillage.

Microsoft launches a new version of its web browser – Internet explorer 5.0, which they claim is faster, more robust and simpler to use than an earlier version. Also, the new version disables a much-hyped feature introduced in Version 4 called “Active Desktop,” which, among other things, allows Windows users to browse their computer’s hard disks as if they were Web pages.
