March - Phone companies are rushing to get out DSL - a faster way to glide the Internet. It will be awhile before most have access to the new technology. It’s seven to 27- times faster than a standard dial-up modem…. Snap.com the venture backed by NBC and CNet unveils the first web portal tailored to computer users with ultra-fast connections (DSL). Snap.com says its new sites tightly integrate video and audio into virtual every web page. For example, Snap.media features a “streaming video” window to present news events…. Paul  Allen’s Vulcan Ventures will spend up to $750 million for as much as 54% of Internet Portal site Go2net. Go2Net’s stock rocketed $26.38 to close at $113.38. Internet IPO’s are still running high. … Priceline.com, an Internet  travel company that allows consumers to name their price for plane tickets, disclosed plans to sell 10 million shares in an IP that would raise $80 million. With William Shatner as its spokesperson, the service was launched last April. April - Officials arrest programmer David L. Smith (30) from New Jersey, and charge him with launching the Melissa e-mail virus that spread across the world over the past week. The virus is responsible for tying up many corporate networks and shutting down e-mail sites… Amazon is buying Livebid.com - a 3-year-old action site. It’s the only live-event auction place online…. IBM and  RealNetworks announce they will work together to develop a system for distributing music over the Internet that blocks piracy. RealNetworks claims that 50 million consumers use its media player to listen to music or watch video… Priceline.com goes public with an IPO - going from $16.00 to $74.50. A year ago, Will Shatner agreed to be the celebrity endorser for Priceline in exchange for 100,000 shares of the company. The company has spent about $24 million on radio and newspaper advertising. Shatner’s shares are worth about $7.4 million. … Yahoo bests estimates with first quarter income at $25 million - from $3.3 million a year ago…. America Online and four others are getting into the Internet name registration business - and will compete with Network Solutions - which has enjoyed a government-sanctioned monopoly for registering domain names for the past six years. Domain names currently end in .com, .org or .net. Other companies are expected to join the bandwagon…. More AOL - AOL bests Wall Street’s third quarter earnings as subscribers continue to sign up in record numbers. AOL’s Internet service exceeded 17million members in April and it added 1.8 million members in the quarter. July - Microsoft Corp  becomes the first company to top $500 billion in market value - equal to the ninth-largest economy in the world as its shares close at a record high Microsoft’s shares have risen almost 500 fold since it went public in 1986… Walt Disney Co. says it will acquire the 58% of Infoseek Corp it does not already own and issue new stock to track its online businesses. The media giant will create a new company created around its Go.com portal site and make its financial performance as a stand-alone enterprise clearer for investors…  There are a number of companies giving away PC’s in order to sign customers up for online service. InterSquid has been shipping “free” Intel and Windows-based computers bundled with internet service for which the company charges a $30 monthly fee ... PC Free of New Hampshire said in February that it would ship millions of Compaq computers to those who paid $40 a month for internet access... Direct Web of Philadelphia charges between $20 and $50 a month for Internet access for its free PC’s. Another Company - Free-PC of Pasadena, Calif - signs customers who are willing to use computers shows screens carry a mandatory advertising strip. So far, they’ve shipped 10,000 free PC’s. At the retail level - EMachines is making noise. You can get a $400 rebate for their $399 machines… Mp3.com goes public. The IPO was offered at $28, but exploded to open in public trading to $92 getting as high as $105.00… AOL changes its instant messaging software to block messages from rival services, but Microsoft hits the market at the same time to go around the block…. Dell Computer announces that it is bundling a year of dell-branded Internet access with some desktop and notebook computers. Dell, like competitor Gateway, will offer the service for $129 a year after the first 12 months. Most ISP’s offer unlimited Internet access for about $20 a month (dial-up of course)… EBay Inc reports a batter-than-expected profit for the second quarter... Etoys has a big gain in sales - but its losses are even bigger - losing $20.8 million or 21 cents last quarter... August -  Sony says it’s slashing the price of its PlayStation console from$129 to $99 and is also reducing the price of its games from $20 to $40. It’s doing so just prior to Sega’s release of its powerful “Dreamcast” game console on September 9…. Apple  sues Emachines over the design of their eOne computer, which looks a lot like the popular iMac. Emachines offers sub-$1000 computers. The iMac, introduced last August, has received wide recognition for its egg-shaped design and has been credited with returning to profitability a company once believed to be dead. The outside - both look similar, but in the inside, the iMac is much more powerful… Sun Microsystems Inc acquires Star Division - which makes popular software among Linux users…CBS says it will buy a 38% stake in jobs.com... AOL will invest $800 million in gateway over the next who years, and, in exchange, Gateway promises to spend $85 million in marketing AOL’s Internet services. All Gateway PC’s will include AOL-onlyaccess….  IBM says they will no longer sell consumer PC’s through retail stores. You’ll still be able to get IBM’s “Aptiva” PC models on the Internet.
