A record $206 billion settlement between the nation’s major cigarette makers and state attorney’s is announced, ending a grueling legal war of attrition that began in 1994 when state lawsuits sought recover of tax money spent treating sick smokers.

The Federal Reserve pushes down interest rates for the third consecutive time. 4.75% is the lowest level in four years.

 Impeachment hearings open with independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr defending his four-year investigation of President Clinton. Impeachment seems more unlikely though, as several Republican lawmakers now saying they would vote against impeachment and even more GOP members swaying towards a “nay” vote.

President Clinton rejects a U.N. letter written by Saddam Hussein’s deputy to pledge renewed cooperation with arms inspectors. But the letter is full of conditions, with Clinton deems “unacceptable.”

President Clinton calls off an Iraqi attack, ordering the Pentagon to scrub any bombing strikes after Baghdad drops conditions on weapons inspections. 

Americans in some parts of the country are paying less than $1 a gallon for gasoline – the lowest in nearly five years.

Monica Lewinsky is coming out with a book. She’ll collaborate with Andrew Morton, Princess Diana’s biographer. Working title is “Monica’s Story by Andrew Morton.”

Marries – Carmen Electra to Dennis Rodman.

President Clinton agrees to pay Paula Jones $850,000 to drop her sexual harassment lawsuit, with no apology or admission of guilt, ending the four-year legal battle that led to the impeachment proceedings against him. “I feel that I have won. I think I have made an impact in the workplace, and I do believe that will prevail over any of the other things in the end,” said Ms. Jones.

 Passing – Black activist Stokely Carmichael (57) – seminal figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960’s.  

 

Sports News – November 15, 1998

Juan Gonzalez of the Texas Rangers wins the American League’s Most Valuable Player award. Gonzalez batted .318 with 45 homers and 157 RBI’s – the most in the Al since Ted Williams and Vern Stephens each had 159 for the Boston Red Sox in 1949.

Sammy Sosa may have finished second to Mark McGwire in the memorable home-run race this baseball season, but he gets the National League’s Most Valuable Player. Sosa, who hit 66 homers, drove in 158 runs.

Steffi Graf advances to the semifinals at the Chase Championships, defeating Monica Seles. 

Longtime Nashville radio and TV personality Ralph Emory is coming out with another book – his third called “The View From Nashville: On The Record With Country Music’s Greatest Stars.”

Hollywood news – Charlie Sheen receives a judge’s permission to leave rehab. Sheen nearly died five months ago from a drug overdose.

Passing – Actress Esther Rolle (79) – Played the mom in the popular sitcom “Good Times.”

Over-the-air digital TV transmission is underway in 22 U.S. cities as TV stations begin the process. The transmissions are digital images of station’s analog signals, but will could lead to HDTV.  Cities are New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Indianapolis, Harrisburg, Columbus, Charlotte (NC), Washington, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Portland (OR), Madison (WI), Raleigh (NC), Milwaukee, and Cincinnati. Music News – November 15, 1998

Jesse Washington, editor of hip-hop magazine Blaze is beaten in his New York office. He identified one of the attackers as rap producer Derek “D-Dot” Angellettie, an associate of rap artist Sean “Puffy” Combs.” Washington was treated at the hospital for fractures to his face. Angellettie denies and allegation.Police believe Angellettie was upset that Washington and the magazine were going to publish a photo of the anonymous musician/rapper called “Mad Rapper” whose debut album is soon to be release by Sean Combs record label (Bad Boy). Later, Angellettie is arrested with another man in the beating. Angellettie is part of rap mogul Sean Combs’ group of producers known as “the Hit Men.”

Oasis member Liam Gallagher is arrested for alleged criminal damage to a photographer’s equipment.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and the Beastie Boys guest on this week’s “Saturday Night Live.”
