Vice President Al Gore unveils more than 200 proposals to improve the Internal Revenue Service, including a provision for “emergency tax refunds” in one business day for hardship cases and new technology to route taxpayer phone calls more efficiently.
Prominent athletes and sports figures will join President Clinton on ESPN to discuss and promote a national racial dialogue. Session is scheduled for April 14.
Fascinating Facts – March 15, 1998
Kathleen E Willey appears on “60-Minutes” this week saying she had been groped by President Clinton and had corresponded with the chief executive after the alleged 1993 encounter. The interview helped propel the show to the top of this week’s ratings.
Burger King introduces a 99-cent menu “Great Tastes” hopefully to lure customers into making bigger purchases. The value menu includes the Whopper Jr. sandwich, a five-piece Chicken Tenders entrée, a bacon cheese-burger and medium-sized orders of French fires, soft drinks, milk shakes and onion rings.
“Great Tastes” is also a stab at rival McDonalds.

How high is high? – Earthlink, Amazon and 6 other Internet stocks have watched their prices reach record highs – all speculation. Amazon finished the week with a market capitalization approaching $1.9 billion, despite the fact that the bookseller has never had profit and posted sales of $148 million last year.

Good-bye O’Malley - Big news this week is the LA Dodgers have been sold for $311 million to Rupert Murdoch’s Fox group. Walter O’Malley has been associated with the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers since he bought a controlling interest in 1950.

“Rugrats” – the popular Nichelodeon cartoon series, is becoming a comic strip. Look for it in newspapers April 5.
Actor Christian Slater is released from jail after serving 59 days on battery and drug charges. His good behavior cut down a 3-month sentence.

Cable TV Ratings Record
Basic cable movie sets new record – USA Network’s premiere of a new “Moby Dick” with Patrick Stewart and Gregory Peck draws almost 6 million viewers.
Voice actors for the Simpsons want raises. All make under $35,000 per episode but want $100,000. Voices include Nancy Cartwright, Hank Azaria, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Harry Shearer and Yeardley Smith.
Looking up – ABC-TV’s “Drew Carey’ show hits its second highest rating ever “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place”, a new comedy which follows Drew Carey, scored the biggest opening night show since “Spin City.”
Drew Carey is hot – ABC is close to finalizing negotiations with Drew Carey to host and executive produce a summer version of the British series “Whose Line Is It Anyway.” Looks like six episodes will be ordered.
