The Pentagon announces that it will inoculate an estimated 2.4 million of its military personnel and reservists against anthrax – the first time the military has conducted such a vaccination program to protect against a germ-warfare agent.

The Clinton administration decides to open the way for full-scale U.S. trade and investment opportunities in Vietnam by lifting the principal obstacle to normalized economic relations between the two countries.

Opposition leader Kim Dae Jung claims victory in South Korea’s presidential election.

Rescuers reach the charred wreckage of a Ukrainian passenger jet on a remote slope near Mt Olympus. One of the 70 on board survived.

President Clinton emphatically denies all of the allegations made against him in Paula Corbin Jones’ sexual harassment lawsuit and urges a federal judged to dismiss the case. He said he never sexually harassed Jones or any other woman.

The Clinton’s have a new dog – a chocolate-colored Labrador puppy.

The Treasury Department reports that the federal government has run a surplus over a 12-month period – something not seen since 1970.

Ford says it will invest $420 million in a fuel cell powered auto.

Chris Farley Dies

Passing – Chris Farley (33) – 300-pound Saturday Night Live comic known for his physical comedy. He was found dead in his Chicago apartment.

Actress Diane Farr is added to the couch panel of MTV’s “Loveline.” The show begins its third season on January 26.

VH1 presents “Clint Eastwood Talking Music” – a look at the actor’s musical interests.

Don’t miss the HBO comedy hour this week as it presents “Steve Harvey: One Man.”

Carl Perkins is partially paralyzed after suffering his third and most serious stroke. He’s 65.

Passing – Nicolette Larson (45) – best known for her 1978 hit “Lotta Love.” Larson died of complications from cerebral edema (swelling of the brain caused by abnormal fluid accumulation).
