The Promise Keepers - - the wave of Christian fundamentalism that his been building across the country – hold a rally on the D.C. Mall. The Promise Keepers found is former University of Colorado football coach William McCartney. Over half a million showed at this rally.

The White House releases tapes showing President Clinton at private meetings with major democratic campaign contributors and potential donors – tapes that may be pivotal to allegations of campaign fund-raising abuses in last year’s elections. 

Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones – the only survivor of the Aug. 31 car crash that killed Princess Diana – goes home from the hospital. It was also revealed this week – that Rees-Jones abused alcohol for at least a week leading to the accident. 

Responding to recent tainted berry scares – President Clinton asks Congress to pass legislation requiring that imported fruits and vegetables meet the same safety standards as home-grown crops. 

Congolese President Laurent Kabila tells reporters in Zambia that a United Nations team investigating alleged massacres in the former Zaire should leave the country. The group is investigating alleged massacres during the civil war.


Technology news – October 1, 1997

Microsoft Crop released the much anticipated upgrade of its Internet Browser – IE 4.0. It lets users easily jump from a Web site, to something offline such as a document.


Sports news – October 1, 1997

Playoffs – Cleveland eliminates the Yankees and now on to Baltimore. On the NL side – it’ll be Atlanta vs. Florida.


Music news – October 1, 1997

This week - Orion pictures releases “gang Related” – and the final screen performance of slain rapper Tupac Shakur.

“Candle in the Wind” – the Princess Di tribute by Elton John – has shipped about 26 million copies.

Don’t miss the HBO special this week – “Classic Whitney’ – a concert by Whitney Houston.


Television news – October 1, 1997

X-Files star David Duchovny wants the show to be shot in Los Angeles, not its current Vancouver and is threatening to leave.

On Saturday Night Live – Matthew Perry hosts with musical guest Oasis.
