NATO seizes the police posts in Bosnia –Hersegovina in a new widening of the role of U.S. led peacekeepers in Bosnia. A police chief is installed to embattle Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic.

Some 500 virgins from throughout the nation and the world converge in front of the White House to celebrate their abstinence and urge young people to “honk for purity.” It was the last stop in 25, organized by the Pure Love Alliance, a group of male and female students and church groups promoting abstinence from sex before marriage and fidelity within marriage.  

President Clinton celebrates his 51st birthday with a clambake dinner at the home of actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. Clinton was joined by 75 others including Jimmy Buffet, Merv Griffin, Katharine Graham and author William Styron.

Footprints left on the shore of a South African lagoon after a violent rainstorm 117,000 years ago are found. The preserved prints are said to be the oldest fossilized tracks of an anatomically modern human ever found.

McDonalds says it is reevaluating its Arch Delux “adult” cheeseburger and may be pulling it. The company introduced the burger with much fanfare last year, but customers seem to be balking at the expensive hamburger, which sells from $2.09 to $2.49.  

Credit report giant Experian shuts down a new Internet service after an undetermined number of consumer credit reports were electronically delivered to the wrong people. Some day the problem proves there is no guarantee to Internet privacy and it’s foolish to put such information on-line.

Two new late-night talkshows – Quincy Jones’ “Vibe” and “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show” have dropped a bit in the national ratings.

Vicki Lawrence is named permanent of the Fox morning show – “Fox After Breakfast” which will be re-named “The Vicki Lawrence Show.”

New trend – VH1 appears to have a hit with its “pop-up” video series where on-screen text is added to music videos. It’s described as mixing pop culture arcane with music journalism. The first shows aired in December and they are tied mainly to 1980’s videos. Created by Tad Low and Woody Thompson.

Music news – August 15, 1997

VH1 presents “Dance Dance Dance” with the Pointer sisters. It’s described as a retro ‘80’s party. Also appearing Lisa Lisa, Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung and Dead or Alive.

New series on VH1 debuts this week – “Behind the Music.” The series looks at the personal lives of music artists. For the debut program – Milli Vanilli and MC Hammer.

MTV announces that the Rolling Stones will perform on the first “Live From the 10 Spot” – a weekly showcase of live performances. It all happens October 14.

Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford win the appeals court decision allowing them to use the name Creedence Clearwater Revisited. Both are founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. A previous court ruling forced the pair to use the name Cosmo’s Factory when touring. It was original band member John Fogerty that sought the “Revisited” injunction. 

The Rolling Stones gather under the Brooklyn Bridge to announce plans for their “Bridges to Babylon” tour, which kicks off September 9.


Radio news – August 15, 1997

Comedy Central’s interactive live remote “RadioActive” is now heard on 40 radio stations. It’s produced from New York and is heard on morning or afternoon shows.

Recently, Z-100 (WHTZ) New York celebrated 14 years of playing the hits. Z-100 brought back some of the personalities from the past – Scott Shannon, Ross Britain, Shadow Stevens, Adam Curry, Jack Da Wack and Kid Kelly.
