A day after rebels first captured Kinshasa, Zaire – thousands of reinforcements pour in to take it back as rebel chief Laurent Kabila takes over Zaire. Earlier, corrupt President Mobuto Sese Seko fled with members of his family, ending more than three decades of ruthless rule.

A federal judge denied a request by James B. McDougal, President Clinton’s former Whitewater partner, to remain free while he appeals convictions on fraud and conspiracy charges.

The Pentagon puts out another call to close more military bases and trim support forces by 225,000. 

 The House ethics Committee rejects House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s plan to loan Bob Dole $300,000 – and says it can be no more that $150,000.

O.J. Simpson who showed up for a court hearing in ragged pants with a hole in the back said he has not money and would have to move out of his Brentwood mansion because of the wrongful death damage award against him.

Millie – President Bush’s “first dog” – dies at the age of 12.

The Federal Reserve Board will not hike interest rates this time.

 Silver Charm with jockey Gary Stevens wins the Triple Crown championship.

Japan’s contentious trade surplus soared in April – growing 163.7% to $7.23 billion in April. Economists attributed the jump mainly to car exports which grew 32.1% in April from a year earlier.

The Clinton Administration announces a series of steps that it said will lead to improvement in the operation of the IRS – but which critics said were meant to head off wider changes that are expected to be proposed by a special commission next week.

Deadlocked Middle East peace talks – PLO leader Yasser Arafat appealed to President Clinton to intervene personally in the crisis.

The space shuttle Atlantis slid up to Russia’s orbiting Mir station and docked to drop off equipment urgently needed to ensure the crew has breathable air.

Music news – May 15, 1997

Fleetwood Mac is reuniting for two MTV shows. They are Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks – who haven’t performed together since 1982.

 The Disney Channel will present LeAnn Rimes in her first TV special. Look for it June 22.

Paul McCartney conducts a town hall meeting carried by VH1 and on the Internet via E! Online, AudioNet and Sun Microsystems. Graham Technology used its JPEG push for video. McCartney took questions from the Internet. 

C. Delores Tucker – an activist who hates dirty lyrics is accusing Interscope records of poisoning young people by distributing the sex and violence-themed music of rappers such as Junior M.A.F.I.A. and Lil Kim.

Television news – May 15, 1997

After 172 episodes – NBC’s “Wings” calls it quits and goes out in a one-hour finale. The show debuted back in April of 1990.

Lots of anticipation for Roseanne’s new talkshow. Stations are lining up to carry it, according to syndicator King World.

Season finale - Wow! “3rd Rock From the Sun” on NBC this week – is in 3D! “Get your Barq’s 3-D glasses at participating retailers where Coca-Cola products are sold, or at Little Caesars Pizza locations.” 

Looks like the X-Files season finale, a cliff-hanger will be a plug for viewers to see the X-Files movie in theaters this summer. Interesting move.
