The FBI says TWA Flight 800 most likely crashed due to a mechanical failure. 


Entertainment news – May 1, 1997

Out of the closet as romantic actress Ann Heche (Volcano) reveals she is Ellen DeGeneres’ real-life love interest. She also co-stars in the upcoming “Wag the Dog” with Dustin Hoffman, Robert de Niro and Woody Harrelson.


Technology news – May 1, 1997

New DVD Players

Have you bought a DVD player yet? You’ll plunk down around $500. There’s good news on the software front: more studios are releasing DVD product, with Warner Home Video out front. They just released 41 movies on DVD. Now Columbia TriStar has put out its first DVD slate. According to VideoScan, 47,000 DVD titles had been purchased through April 20.  


Television news – May 1, 1997

“Married With Children” says goodbye after 11 years. The finale sees Al giving Kelly away in a wedding to a felon.

Another Fox show leaving - “Martin” starring Martin Lawrence is ending its run after five seasons. 

Time Warner says it is shutting down its Orlando (FL) interactive television cable network it introduced just two years ago. Technical difficulties and high costs were cited.

MTV West Coast – MTV says it is taking over property once accompanied by “Marineland” in the Palos Verdes section of Los Angeles – right on the ocean. MTV says it is turning it into a seaside resort dubbed “Motel California.” Look for some original summertime programming from the site, including the origination of “Singled Out.”

Ted Turner says his CNN should carry more positive stories to balance its coverage of tragedies. “We ought to be reporting on some of the things that we’re doing right.”


Music news – May 1, 1997

Paul McCartney is doing his first online chat. It’s in conjunction with “Flaming Pie” his first album in four years. You’ll have to log on to the VH1 website. It all happens May 17.
