Former National Security Advisor Anthony Lake withdraws his name form consideration to become CIA director.

The House passes a ban on a late-term abortion procedure for the third time in a year – giving the President a challenge to again veto a bill that he vetoed last year.

The Liggett Group acknowledges that smoking causes cancer and heart disease, nicotine is addictive and the industry markets its products to underage youths. The admission is unprecedented and the first for any tobacco company.

Passing – Fred Zinnemann (89) – Academy Award-winning director whose films include “From Here To Eternity” and “High Noon.”

 

Television news – March 15, 1997

“Mad About You” gets a revised theme song – this one sung by Anita Baker. Look for it beginning April 1.

ABC’s “Ellen” adds more guest stars for the lead character’s April 30 coming out episode. So far, Demi Moore, Dwight Yoakam, Bill Bob Thornton, Oprah Winfrey, Laura Dern and k.d. Lang are on that list.

Mike Myers hosts “Saturday Night Live” this week with Aerosmith as musical guests.

Cathee Sandstrom, editor at Bop and B Magazines, says right now, “We’re trying to push some new boy bands, like the Backstreet Boys. For a year, they’ve been due to release their U.S album and in anticipation of that, we’ve been promoting them, hoping they’ll be big for us the way New Kids On The Block were.” The Orlando, FL group has been successful overseas and in Canada, but not here.
