Arnoldo Aleman is now president of Nicaragua as his party won the first congressional clash with the leftists Sandinistas. 

John Martin a school custodian and his wife, Alice, a teacher’s aid says that the source of a clandestine tape recording of House speaker Newt Gingrich and his aides. They were not motivated by partisan politics when they delivered the tape to rep. Jim McDermot (D-wash.).

A turboprop Embraer 120 commuter plane crashes near Detroit – Killing 29.

House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.)  accuses Republicans of engaging in a cover-up to prevent evidence against the House speaker from coming to light before all members decide his punishment.

The FDA – the popular allergy drug is found by the FDA to pose a risk of heart trouble. It is not though, regarded as an “imminent hazard.”

Intel Corp. unveils the MMX Pentium chip which brings higher quality video, 3D graphics and better sound to a PC.

NCAA rules that for the first time – student-athletes can work part-time during their academic year. Most would probably work in something sports related.  

Bruce McNall – once the owner of the Los Angeles Kings – is sentenced to almost six years in prison on fraud charges.

People’s Choice Awards –

Some winners – Brooke Shields, Oprah Winfrey, Tim Allen, Mel Gibson, Sandra Bullock, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire. Favorite shows went to ER and Seinfeld.

Disney announces a long-term agreement with Chairman and Chief Executive Michael D. Eisner with a base salary of $750,000 a year (no change).
