The company says it is cutting back on marketing and asking customers to cut back. It says the average customer now spends about 32 minutes a day online, more than double the time in September... February - TCI (cable) says it will reinstate MTV and sister VH1 – which it dropped on several it its major cable systems – due to public outcry. TCI set off a big concern when it dropped VH-1, MTV, Lifetime, WGN, Comedy Central and E! to make room for new services that were offering to pay for carriage. March - Queen Elizabeth II formally inaugurates Buckingham Palace’s royal home page in the Internet…. Netcom On Line Communications announces what it will put restrictions on its heavy users and offer better service for customers who are willing to pay more. The company broke ground three years ago when it introduced flat-rate Internet service for $19.95 a month. It now offers premium plans for new customers - $25 a month or $30 a month for those who want access to online research libraries…. Disney says next month it’s launching a new pay site for kids - “Disney’s Daily Blast.” The site will target kids 3 to 12 and include games, stories, news quizzes, comic books and more. Disney says it will charge $4.95 a month or $39.95 a year…Online bookseller Amazon.com files to sell 2.5 million common share in an IPO - $13 apiece. April - The Supreme Court rules that cable television operators must carry the signals of all TV broadcasters in their area. The cable industry claimed that its local owners had a free right to pick and choose local stations under the 1st amendment. The ruling spares educational stations and small independent stations from being dumped on cable systems… The FCC approves a plan awarding new licenses to owners of the nation’s television stations to broadcast digital television. Under the plan, existing stations will get a second television channel to broadcast their signal in digital form. In most major cities, those channels will be located on the UHF spectrum. Example: WCBS-TV (channel 2) in New York will broadcast its digital counterpart on UHF Channel 56…. Microsoft says it will acquire Web TV Networks for $425 million. Web TV enables consumers to access the Internet via a $350 box, which attaches to a television set. The service costs $19.95 a month. Web TV was founded in 1995 by former Apple Computer engineer Steve Perlman…

June - Microsoft agrees to invest $1 billion in Comcast Corp - one of the nation’s largest cable television companies. For its investment, Microsoft will receive newly issued Comcast stock and will have an 11.5% stake in the company…Microsoft Corp. announces that it is joining rival Netscape in a plan that would give users more control over personal information collected on the Internet. 

July -  America Online (AOL) signs marketing agreements with Amazon.com Inc and 1-800-Flowers as part of its strategy to use its 8 million members to attract partners. Amazon.com will pay $19 million over three years for promotion on AOL’s Web site and NetFind Internet directory. AOL will get $25 million from 1-800- Flowers plus sales revenues… Steve Jobs Address To Apple:

August - Microsoft says it is investing $150 million in competitor Apple Computer in an alliance that stuns the industry. Apple said it has agreed to make Microsoft’s Internet Explorer the default browser of its Macintosh operating system.
