Update on Unabomber case - Assistant U.S. Atty Robert Cleary says that suspect Theodore Kaczynski kept a journal on the bombings and expressed “his desire to kill” tying himself directly to the bombings. In a number of instances, the daily entries noted “I mailed that bomb” or “I sent that bomb.” The documents were seized at a tiny cabin in Montana. Kacynski is a onetime UC Berkeley math professor.
Mexico’s ruling party passes hundreds of sweeping regulations to combat internal corruption, compete in fairer elections and open itself to democracy as never before.
Robert Chaegon Kim - a Navy analyst is arrested for passing more than 50 top-secret classified documents to the South Korean government. It’s one of the few cases of alleged spying by a friendly country.
Susan McDougal refuses to cooperate in the Whitewater Case and remains in jail for contempt of court. Instead of cooperating with independent counsel Kenneth Starr in exchange for leniency, Ms McDougal is remaining silent when called before a federal grand jury. All other Whitewater figures have agreed to cooperate with Starr. According to her lawyers, friends and relatives, Susan McDougal’s goal is to put Starr on the defensive and challenge the integrity of the Whitewater investigation that led to her conviction.
Later - Susan McDougal, set to begin serving a two-year prison term - wins a delay. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put off McDougal’s reporting date pending her appeal of a contempt of court citation, which could bring her an additional 18 months of prison time. She was to begin serving time for misusing a $300 thousand loan she received in 1986.
Palestinian police and demonstrators battle Israel forces throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the third day of an escalating crisis, leaving 44 Palestinians and 11 Israelis dead... The battle than spreads to Jerusalem where 3 more die and 100 are hurt near Al Aqsa mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Technology news – September 22, 1996
Time Warner agrees to deliver MSNBC in half of the homes it serves by mid-1999. It’s seen as a blow to the Fox News Channel, which is set to debut next month. Fox thought it had an informal agreement to be carried on many of the Time-Warner systems.
Loral Space & Communications says that it will buy AT&T’s Skynet broadcast satellite unit for $712.5 million in cash. The company is an offshoot of Lockeheed Martin’s $9.1 billion purchase of Loral Corp’s defense businesses. The deal follows Hughes Electronics’ announcement that it agreed to buy satellite operator PanAmSat’s 14-satellite global network for $3 billion.
AT&T offers a simplified pricing plan under which any direct-dialed long-distance call within the U.S. will cost 15 cents a minute. The plan is an attempt to fend-off smaller long-distance providers, which gave grabbed $14 billion of the $80 billion longs distance market. The new plan will be an addition to six other existing AT&T pricing options.

Passing - actress Dorothy Lamour (81). Best known for her portrayals of exotic South Sea heroines in the 30’s and ‘40’s and of course, the straight-faced foil to Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in their seven “road” pictures. She once said of the “road” pictures - “I was the happiest and highest paid straight woman in the business.” Bob Hope said of her:
“Dolores and I are deeply saddened by Dottie’s passing. She was a grand lady on screen as in life. She was a lady of quality, beauty and class, which always made me look good. She was a wonderful actress, a great performer and a dear friend.”
Passing - Paul Weston - conductor and arranger (84). Weston’s career spanned nearly 50 years, working with many artists - Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Dinah Shore and Rosemary Clooney.
John Kennedy Jr. (35) marries longtime girlfriend Carolyn Bessette in a top-secret weekend on a secluded island off of Georgia. Camden County Probate Judge Martin Gillette said his office issued a marriage license to the couple this week. The couple has been going together for about five years. She use to work in public relations for Calvin Klein.
Marries - Actor Jim Carrey to actress Lauren Holly. He’s busy making a new film - “Liar Liar.”
“Big” - the Broadway musical based on the Tom Hanks movie, will close in October after 193 performances.
Kelsey Grammer who stars as “Frasier,” checks himself into the Betty Ford Center for treatment of substance abuse, causing production of the series to be delayed. The actor’s decision follows after he got into a single-car accident near Hollywood. NBC is hoping they’ll have fresh episodes for November sweeps.
Melanie Griffith and Antoinio Banderas are the proud parents of a baby girl - Stella del Carmen Banderas Griffith. It’s her third and his first.
BET Movies - a new pay-TV network showcasing African American actors is set to launch in February. Actor Denzel Washington is one of the investors.
