White House officials defended Hillary Rodham Clinton after a new book revealed that she met with a New Age self-help author and psychic researcher. The book is “the Choice.” In the Washington Post this week – Bob Woodward reported that she found encouragement by talking with Jean Houston, co-director of the foundation for Mind Research, which studies psychic experience and altered and expanded consciousness.
The Supreme Court rules that it is not “double jeopardy” for prosecutors to seize a criminal’s house and assets after he or she has been sent to prison.
A truck bomb explodes outside a high-rise apartment building housing U.S. Air Force personnel in Saudi Arabia – killing 23 Americans and injuring more than 300.
President Clinton appoints retired Gen. Wayne Downing to carry out a full assessment of the Saudi bombing.
G-7 meeting in France as President Clinton calls for a 40-point plan to prevent terrorist attacks as the world’s largest seven industrial democracies declare their condemnation of terrorism. The meeting was supposed to be about economics.
Police sprayed tear gas into the crowd during a Ku Klux Klan rally in Ann Arbor after a few counter demonstrators hurled rocks at officers and rushed the door of the police station. At least five were arrested and some officers suffered chemical irritation.
Medical/Health news – June 22, 1996
The FDA approved Nevirapine – a new class of AIDS medicines, clearing patients to begin adding the drug to their treatment combinations this summer. It’ll be sold under the brand name Viramune.
The FDA says high doses of standard birth control pills are safe and effective in preventing pregnancy when used as “morning after” pills after unprotected sex.

The Supreme Court strikes down most of a 4-year-old law that required cable TV operators to restrict sexually explicit programs on special channel s that the public can access. Children must be protected, but that’s up to the parents –not Congress.
