A  fire at a Manila disco kills 150 and leaves dozens injured. “It was like hell, “ said DJ Marvin Reyes, who watched flames catch the hair and clothes of screaming victims. “I tried to announce there was a fire, but the microphone stopped working. Exits had been blocked. Reports say the fire stated when a cooking fuel tank exploded. 

 

Technology news – March 15, 1996

MCI, which as been offering Internet service for about a year, says it will become more aggressive in signing Internet customers up. MCI will match AT&T’s offer of five hours of free Internet time a month to people who use its long distance service. MCI also plans to continue offering unlimited Internet service for $19.95 per month – the same as AT&T.

Singer Michael Jackson announces a multimillion-dollar show business deal with Saudi Arabia’s richest investor – Prince al-Waleed bin Taial. They say their intention is to focus on “traditional family values” and use global family entertainment to unite generations and ‘bring peace, brotherhood and love to the world.”

Music news – March 15, 1996

 An LA woman identified as T.D.P. files a negligence lawsuit against the estate of Eric Wright (Easy-E), who died of AIDS last year, claiming the late rapper infected her with HIV.

The Sex Pistols reunion is a go and plans call for a six-week U.S. trek this summer. It’s part of a world tour and comes some 18 years after the group broke up following a U.S. Tour. All four original members will perform. They are John (Johnny Rotten) Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock (who was replaced by the late Sid Vicious). Lydon announced, “We have found a common cause and it’s your money.”
