GOP debate finds Bob Dole and Patrick Buchanan battling over ethics and negative advertising in New Hampshire.

A Bob Dole ad appearing in the New Hampshire area takes aim at Buchanan, assailing him as a denigrator of women and a dangerous isolationist “too extreme” for the country.

Patrick Buchanan wins the New Hampshire primary – reshaping the GOP presidential race. 

Patrick Buchanan suspends Larry Pratt – a campaign co-chairman after learning of charges the official has appeared at gatherings of militant hate groups. 

Twelve die and at least 20 more are injured when an Amtrak train bound for Chicago and a commuter train nearing Washington collide on a wooded, snowbound stretch of track just beyond the nation’s capital.

A bomb believed to be the work of the outlawed Irish Republican Army rips apart a double-decker bus in London, killing one with 8 injured. 


Technology news – February 15, 1996

Internet – IBM says it will unveil a grand design to link its platforms to the Internet. The new offerings will unlock the vast amounts of data stored on IBM-built computers, which the company estimates houses up to two-thirds of all the world’s corporate computer data. IBM says it will use software designed to run on the global computer network as a kind of universal language to more closely link its PC’s workstations, minicomputers and mainframes. “Customers of all sizes are getting connected to the Internet and looking for novel ways to use it.” “The hottest content for the Internet is the content our customers already have on their computing systems” said a spokesperson.  

More Internet – Microsoft Corp announces the creation of two divisions focused on the Internet and online activities. The decision marks a turnaround for Bill Gates, who said at a briefing for analysts a few months ago that a separate Internet division would be “like having an electricity division or a software division.”

Apple agrees to license its operating system to Motorola. Apple has seen its licensing strategy shrink, and it’s been suffering through a string of financial and marketing problems. “Our intention is to get as many people around the world excited using the Macintosh operating system as we can,” said a spokesperson.


Entertainment/Celebrity/Hollywood news – February 15, 1996

 In an interview on Entertainment Tonight with Jann Carl, actor Martin Sheen says he plans to divorce his wife of nearly six months, Donna Peele, because he was suffocating and “had to come up for air.”

Passing – Actor McLean Stevenson, best known as Lt. Col. Blake in MASH. He was 66.

Passing – Tommy Rettig – Known to millions as Lassie’s first boy master during the 1950’s. He held the job for four years when child actor Jon Provost (Timmy) and a new family took the reins in 1958. Rettig was 54.

Television News – February 15, 1996

CNN and Sports Illustrated announced a new all-sports channel. Says Ted Turner – “it’s a partnership between the most respected name in TV news and the most respected name in sports journalism, coming together to create a world class sports channel.” Turner makes it clear this is an information channel and will not carry play-by-play like ESPN. The new channel will be called “CNN-SI.” Look for it beginning in December. 

Sports Illustrated is a property of Time Inc, which is merging with Turner in a $7.5 billion deal – a deal waiting for federal regulatory approval.

Fox announces that it will begin labeling the programs it airs for sexual and violent content – the first network to do so.

Paralyzed actor Christopher Reeve is interviewed on Larry King’s CNN talkshow this week. It’s Reeve’s first in-studio interview since his horse-riding accident last May 27.

Radio news – February 15, 1996

 WYNY-FM in New York stumped listeners for a while. The station left the country format on February 4, but for a while, put other personalities from its other stations  on the air – one was Mancow from Chicago (WRCX) who launched “attacks” on New York’s Z-100 and Howard Stern. The new format, which debuted last week is top-40/rhythm and does not include Mancow. 

Last week, President Clinton signed the telecommunications Act of 1996 which sets the stage for major changes in radio, cable and online media. The radio industry is now set for major consolidation as the bill allows for more station ownership in a given market. 


Music news – February 15, 1996

Snoop Doggy Dogg is acquitted along with his bodyguard of first and second-degree murder charges on the shooting death of a gang member in Los Angeles. MTV covered the event.

Snoop Dogg and fellow rapper Tupac Shakur will appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” this week. Among the scheduled songs the pair is “2 of America’s Most Wanted.” Tom Arnold will host.  

Rapper Slick Rick who received a sentence of three to 10 years in jail for attempted murder in 1991, is out on a work release program and is preparing a new album.
