The Senate rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have given Congress the right to enact laws prohibiting desecration of the American flag.

Rep. Enid Greene Waldhotlz (R-Utah) said that blind love made her the innocent dupe of a husband who defrauded her family and possibly financed her 1994 campaign with bad money. She has no plans to resign.

Buffalo records its worst snow storm on record. Buffalo’s record 27.9 inches of snow in 24 hours was produced by a narrow band of squalls along the shore of Lake Erie that became stuck over Buffalo. 

The first U.S. Marines to form part of NATO’s Balkan peacekeeping deployment land in Sarajevo.

A Chinese court convicts leading dissident Wei Jinsheng of attempting to overthrow the government and sentences him to 14 years in prison.

Passing - Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan – famous for flying his single-engine plane west from New York to Long Beach (CA) in 1938 -  but went the other way and landed in Ireland. One of his two compasses failed and Corrigan explained the other malfunctioned and pointed 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

 

Music news – December 8, 1995

Looks like The Eagles are the top grossing concert group this year – earning just over $60 million. Others in the top-10 – Grateful Dead,  R.E.M., Van Halen, Tom Petty, Billy Joel/Elton John, Boyz II Men and Alan Jackson.

Michael Jackson remains in serious condition after being admitted to the intensive care unit at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. He’s being treated for a variety of medical problems – gastroenteritis, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

Guns ‘N” Roses plans to issue a new album next year – so – they will be back!

Touring – Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur Dr. Dre, DJ Quick and Tha Dogg Pound will tour in a memorial tribute to Eric (Easy-E) Wright. 

It’s official – The Grateful Dead is breaking up. Rumors have been floating since the Aug. 9 death of Jerry Garcia.

Bruce Springsteen appears on David Letterman this week.

Television news – December 8, 1995

NBC and Microsoft announce they will invest up to $100 million over the next several years in a new 24-hour news channel. NBC is getting rid of “America’s Talking” and in its place – this new channel not yet named. “AT” lasted only 17 months. The new channel will debut in the second quarter of 1996. ABC says it is launching an all-news channel – set to debut in 1997.

Friends hot – It seems – the six co-stars of “Friends” now have movie deals. Jennifer Aniston has five movies coming out. David Schwimmer has a four-pic deal with Miramax… and so on. The two-year-old sitcom also has a cookbook, soundtrack album and a trivia book. The series is only in its second year. 

The Stephanie Miller show is being cancelled.

Comedy Central cancels “Mystery Science Theater 3000.
