O.J. Simpson murder trial – Detective Mark Fuhrman asserts his 5th Amendment rights against self incrimination and would not answer questions when asked by defense attorneys if he framed O.J. Simpson.

In China – First Lady Hillary makes a speech indirectly condemning the country’s population control policies and emphasizing the importance of family. 

Honolulu – President Clinton opens the last commemoration of the Allied victory in WWII – pledging to maintain U.S. military strength to “defeat the forces of darkness in our time.”

Bob Dole calls for an end to most bilingual education in what he called the “embarrassed-to-be-American crowds.”

In Toronto – A British warplane performing at an air show plunged into Lake Ontario and burst apart. The seven crew members aboard died. 

 

Sports news – September 1, 1995

Cal Ripken Jr. of The Baltimore Orioles breaks Lou Gehrig’s record by appearing in 2,131 consecutive games.

 

Music news – September 1, 1995

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opens in Cleveland. “We did it. We did it! Tell the world, we did it!” said Mayor Michael R. White. A brief concert is scheduled later in the day with Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Little Richard.  

She’s the talk of the industry as ten competing music/record companies are competing to sign Janet Jackson. She says she’s worked hard to get to this point.

She rocks too? - Tonya Harding’s Golden Blades rock band opened for Kool and the Gang in Portland Ore – to a lot of boos. She dodged a few plastic bottles thrown at the state. She’s on three years probation for her dirty dead against Nancy Kerrigan.

CBS will air its first-ever ad for a gangsta rap album – this one for new artist Tha Dogg Pound – and “Dogg Food.” Look for it Sept. 16.
