Philip Morris launches a massive recall involving its top-selling cigarette brands saying defective filters could cause dizziness and irritation. The company says it asked retailers to remove from their shelves many lines of its Marlboro, Benson & Hedges, Merit, Virginia Slims, and Basic brands among others.
Serb rebels continue to hold more than 200 U.N. soldiers hostage and three French peacekeepers are killed after pitched battles with Serbs who captured a U.N.-held bridge near the center of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo.
Bosnia’s foreign minister is killed when his helicopter is shot down over Serb-held territory and Bosnian Serbs stepped up their defiance of the world’s major powers by capturing yet another group of U.N. hostages, this time Britons.
Three days after an intruder was shot on White House grounds, an unarmed man climbs over the mansion’s 10-foot fence and is seized by Secret Service agents.
President Clinton declares he is ready to permit the temporary use of American ground forces in Bosnia to help U.N. peacekeepers move to safer positions if necessary. Republican lawmakers quickly asserted that he would need Congress’ approval.
President Clinton, speaking at a televised “town hall” meeting in Billings, Mont, denounces members of self-styled militias while defending his support of certain restrictions on firearms. “The most important thing we can do to make your father safer is to have everybody in this room, whatever their political party or their views, stand up and say it is wrong to condemn people who are out there doing their job and wrong to threaten them.”
O.J. Simpson Trial Update – May 24, 1995
O.J. Simpson case update- Los Angeles Police Department criminalist Collin Yamauchi acknowledges that some elements of the evidence handing in the O.J. Simpson case were imperfect, but he narrowly avoided being drawn back into a fierce debate over the admissibility of a statement Simpson gave police.
NBC News drops its daily updates on the O.J. Simpson trial. CBS suspended its updates several weeks ago. The decisions were prompted by the lengthy, detailed testimony regarding the DNA of the blood found at the murder scene of Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
Business/Economy news – May 24, 1995
Kmart says it will close 72 least profitable outlets, following the closing of 110 stores late last year and early this year. Kmart also relocated, consolidated or closed 120 stores earlier in 1994. The chain says it plans to remodel 85 stores and build 43 discount store and 22 Super Kmart Centers in 1995.
Health/Medical news – May 24, 1995
Researchers identify a flawed gene that is linked to about 20% of colon cancers. Called the R11, the receptor plays a key role in the protective action of a substance called transforming growth factor-beta, or TFG-b. This substance, when activated through the R11 receptor, prevents cells from turning cancerous. Without the R11 receptor, TGF-b doesn’t work. The findings are revealed by Dr Sanford Markowitz, cancer researcher at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University.

Internet - everyone is eying Microsoft as it recently announced an exclusive on-line service agreement with NBC television. The on-line service is set to debut in August, but it could pose a threat to the Big Three of on-line services: America Online, H&R Block’s CompuServe and Prodigy.
Entertainment/Celebrity news – May 24, 1995
Passing - animator Friz Freleng (89). Warner Brothers artist and a prime force in Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig cartoons. He was the inspiration for Yosemite Sam. WIth Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett and Tex Avery, Freleng was a primal force in the history of the film cartoon.
Actor Christopher Reeve is in stable condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center after being thrown from his steed during a horse-jumping competition outside of Charlottesville. Not much else is known about his condition.
Courteny Cox and Jim Lovitz will host the fourth annual MTV Movie award, set to tape June 10 and air June 15.
Television news – May 24, 1995
New Michael Jackson video promo seen on MTV - it’s the one shot in Hungary during Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s honeymoon last year, the one featuring Jackson as a heroic liberator of an oppressed Eastern European dictatorship.
MTV and VH1 will present “The Good Presents: Think Positive,” a special profiling young people and their experiences with HIV and AIDS. The program airs next week
Television trends - comedies are in this fall. With hits “Seinfeld.” “Friends,” “Home Improvement,” and “Grace Under Fire,” the networks will be offering 23 new comedies among their upcoming 34 freshman series

Rapper Flavor Flav is sentenced to three months in jail for firing a gun at a neighbor in his New York apartment building.
A 1961 jam-session recording of “La Bamba” by then-unknowns Mick Jagger and Keith Richards fetches $81,000 at a Christie’s auction in London. The tape was sold by an unidentified pal of Jagger and Richards who recorded the session in his living room.
