Republicans unveil welfare reform legislation calling for more extensive reductions in cash assistance and other spending.

President Clinton pitches Congress to end the baseball strike. “Unfortunately, the parties have not reached agreement. The American people are the real losers.”

The Mexican army takes control of rebel strongholds held by the Zaptista National Liberation Army.

Passing – Former Sen. J. William Fulbright. He was 89.

Jake A. Baker – a college student who wrote on the Internet about torturing, raping and murdering a classmate is ‘a ticking bomb ready to go of” and will be jailed until trial, a federal magistrate said. 

The space shuttle Discovery and its crew glided to a perfect landing, ending a historic rendezvous mission that cleared the way for NASA to dock with the Russian space station.

O.J. Simpson trial – jurors visit the scene of the crime as O.J. is allowed to visit his home for the first time since he was arrested.

 Rapper Tupac Shakur is sentenced to a term between 1 ½ and 4 ½ years in prison for his 1993 assault of a woman in a Manhattan hotel room. His business manager, Charles Fuller was sentenced to four months in jail and five years’ probation for the same crime. 


Television news – February 8, 1995

On HBO – “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” debuts in April.  

John Anthony Masterson, creator of “People’s Court” dies in an auto accident near Malibu. Also killed – his wife, Mary Stewart Macdonald Masterson.

NBC gives Conan O’Brien’s late night show – another six-month renewal. That’ll make it two years on the air. 

On “Saturday Night Live” – Host Bob Newhart. Susanne Pleshette appears and musical guest Des’ree.

This week – special on CBS-TV – “A Walton Wedding” with Richard Thomas, Michael Learned and Ralph Waite.
