Kobe death toll rises to over 4,000 with over 300,000 refugees.  

O.J. Simpson trial – Judge Ito replaces to jurors with alternates after questions were raised about their ability to be fair.

Qubilah Bahiyah Shabazz, daughter of slain black leader Malcolm X, pleads not guilty to charges of attempting to hire a hit man to murder Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

Nintendo of America Inc. charges in a lawsuit that Samsung Electronics has helped produced hundreds of thousands of counterfeit copies of the hit video game Donkey Kong Country. Samsung is a $10 billion firm best known for its branded consumer electronics items. It’s also one of the world’s leading manufacturers of “mask ROM” chips that are used to store the computer code in a video game cartridge.

Television news – January 15, 1995

Fox sets January 31 as the premiere date for its TV movie “The O.J. Simpson Story. The movie’s airdate has been delayed since September but the network says it can show the movie because the O.J. jury is fully sequestered.

Greg Kinnear, who since last February has hosted and executive produced both NBC’s “Later With Greg Kinnear” and E!’s “Talk Soup” is dumping the latter after three years. E! named actor-comedian John Henson, who has been the fill-in host for Kinnear for the first three weeks of 1995 as the permanent “Talk Soup” host.

Roseanne will tape her ABC comedy show from bed. Her doctor has ordered her there during the early stages of her pregnancy, which prompted a script change. She underwent in-vitro fertilization in November.

Star Trek Voyager premiers this week on the new United Paramount Network. Paramount has put up a website at http://voyager.paramount.com/ so trekkies can check out some pictures, view the show’s characters and hear a sound sample of new Capt. Kathryn Janeway’s voice.

Music news – January 15, 1995

Nate Dogg’s debut album will feature his old friends Snoop Doggy Dogg and Warren G.

Guitarist Gilby Clarke announces his departure from Guns N’ Roses, citing creative differences with singer Axl Rose. “Axl has a different vision for the next GNR record and it is not the kind of music I’m comfortable playing.”

Jon Landau whose only managing client has been Bruce Springsteen, takes on another after 20 years – Natalie Merchant, the former 10,000 Maniacs singer.

Rapper Tupac Shakur awaits sentencing on a sex abuse conviction and remains in Riker’s Island prison hospital ward after a New York judge refused to lower his $3 million bail. Shakur, 23 and his road manager were convicted Dec. 1 of abusing a 20-year-old woman.

The Who will get a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame on February 7. Attending will be surviving members Pete Towshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle.
