In The News

NATO warplanes launch a limited but effective attack on a Serbian nationalist and on missile and antiaircraft artillery sites in south-central Croatia. The raid was carefully limited to minimize the risk that it would spur either Serbian nationalists or Croats to widen the war.

Two FBI agents and a District of Columbia police detective are shot and killed as gunfire erupted in the squad room at a Washington DC homicide unit. A fourth person, believed to be the gunman, was also found dead.


Technology news – November 18, 1994

MCI announces services for accessing the Internet. “InternetMCI” - is a portfolio of services that would give customers access to various services available on the Internet, including electronic mail, shopping and high-speed access to browse through thousands of resources available on computers around the world.” The service is expected to begin in January and will join rivals Prodigy, CompuServe and America Online. MCI says it will charge consumers $49.95 for the Internet software, with access charges starting at $19.95 a month for seven hours of use.

Cost Of A New Car – November 18, 1994

Fueled by higher interest rates, increased costs for safety features and fewer rebates - the average new car cost is $23,600 - up almost $1,650 from a year ago. According to a study by CoAmerica - it’s harder to buy a new car than at any time in 15 years.

Passing - Bandleader Cab Calloway (86). Bandleader, singer, author and dancer. He was considered the father of “jive” language - even publishing a “Hepster’s Dictionary” with such sayings as “in the groove” and “Kopasetic” 

Rock musician David Crosby (53) is in critical but stable condition after undergoing a seventy-hour liver transplant operation. Doctors say they are optimistic that he’ll do well.

 Velvet Underground - the influential 60’s rock band, plays two dates in Pittsburgh this week. It’s the first time the band has played in the U.S. in 25 years. Lou Reed was the only original member that couldn’t make it.

More Aaron Spelling - “University Hospital” is set to replace the low-rated “Heaven Help Us” on the ad-hoc “Spelling Network.”

Director George Lucas says he’ll use the latest in computer graphics to update “Star Wars” for a 20th Anniversary release in 1997. He’ll add previously unreleased footage and digitally remaster the soundtrack.

“Baywatch” co-star Pamela Anderson sues the Globe magazine for $12 million for writing that she has a drug problem. The tabloid says they stand behind their story.

CBS and NBC Swap television stations. CBS is giving NBC its Philadelphia TV station (WCAU-TV Channel 10). Channel 10 has been a CBS station since 1948. In exchange for its Philadelphia station, CBS gets KCNC Denver, along with $30 million in cash. The new NBC affiliate in Denver is owned by Gannett Co - KUSA-TV.
