The Kremlin withdraws its offer for a peace summit with Chechnya – the tiny breakaway republic, saying instead it was preparing to bomb the rebel capital into submission. 

One of two pilots aboard a U.S. Army helicopter that went down after straying into North Korean airspace is killed. President Clinton is pressing the Communist government in Pyongyang for the prompt return of the surviving pilot.

 A private Lear jet on a National Guard training mission crashes on a Fresno (CA) street and careens into a crowded apartment complex. At least three are dead.

 

Sports news – December 15, 1994

Major league baseball owners vote to keep the lid on salary caps.

Bruce McNail, former owner of the Los Angeles Kings pleads guilty to four criminal counts stemming from a federal bank fraud investigation. McNail is best known for bringing Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles hockey fans.

 

Technology news – December 15, 1994

Intel Corp reverses course and offers free replacements for it flawed Pentium computer chip along with a “sincere apology” for its botched handling of the situation. Intel had argued that the flaw was a minor problem affecting only a few scientists, but is now reversing its decision based on consumer expectations.

Television news – December 15, 1994

CNN admits that it wrongfully disobeyed a judge’s order in broadcasting former Panamanian strongman Manuel E. Noriega’s jailhouse phone conversations. Defying a judge’s gag order, CNN aired excerpts from the Noriega tapes 11 times.

Former Cheers cast members Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger and George Wendt make guest voice appearances on “The Simpsons” this week.  

 

Music news – December 15, 1994

 “Unplugged” from MTV is becoming a franchise onto itself. Just released – “The Unplugged Collection Vol. 1” drawn from past “Unplugged” programming. The set features tracks by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lenny Kravitz, Soul Asylum, k.d. lang, Paul Simon, rod Stewart, Elton John, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello * the Rude 5, Don Henley, Annie Lennox and R.E.M.

MTV’s “The Year In Rock” emphasizes Kurt Cobain, Trent Reznor and Woodstock II.

Aerosmith closes its 20-month “Get a Grip” tour in Boston.

 A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge extends an arrest warrant, issued last week for Tupac Shakur. He faces weapons charges, but the rapper says he can’t travel from New York to LA. He was shot two weeks in a robbery outside a New York recording studio.

Urge Overkill’s “Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon” was used in Pulp Fiction, but not recorded for the film. Producer Quinton Tarantino found it on an EP that the Chicago band released two years ago on a small label. Tarantino found the EP in a London record store and loved the Neil Diamond-written-song so much, he constructed a key Uma Thurman-John Travolta scene around the tune.

 

Radio news – December 15, 1994

She’s the talk of sports radio – The Fabulous Sports Babe (Nanci Donnellan). She’s the first female to host a nationally syndicated sports talk show on radio. It’s broadcast 5 days a week on the new ESPN Radio Network. The Babe can be heard on 85 stations.  

The FCC taps nearly 80 stations to go ahead and apply to move to the expanded AM band of channels (1610-1700). 

Mario Cuomo may be getting a talk radio show. He’s being wooed to come into the business as the “liberal” counterpart to Rush Limbaugh.
