On Nationwide TV - President Clinton tells the nation that he cannot reverse the nation’s economic slide without raising taxes on the middle class. He called on all Americans to endure sacrifices and insisted that 70% of the tax hike would be to those earning $100,000 (a year) and over.

President Clinton appealed to Congress to enact $496 billion in tax increases and spending cuts to revive the economy.  The plan calls for Congress to slice $336 billion from the deficit and spend $160 billion on investment programs.

Federal Reserve Chief Alan Greenspan praises President Clinton’s economic program – but Congress must enact a deficit-cutting plan for the central bank to get behind it. 

Secretary of State Warren Christopher begins his first mission toe the Middle East this week.

A child whose parents appeared on President Clinton’s electronic town meeting earlier this month became the third person to die from an outbreak of food poisoning. The boy – just 17-months-old, died from respiratory failure brought on by an infection with the E. coli bacteria. His parents, from Seattle – appeared on Clinton’s Feb. 11 electronic town meeting to ask him to move quickly on health reform and to improve the U.S. system of meat inspection.

Passing – Sharon Disney Lund – a daughter of the late Walt Disney. She was 56 and died of cancer.

Music news – February 15, 1993

 Michael Jackson will perform on this year’s Grammy show. So far this year, he’s played on the Super Bowl halftime show, appeared on the American Music Awards – and did a big Oprah Winfrey prime-time interview – all within three weeks and unheard of… for Jackson. 

Michael Jackson’s recent media blitz (see above) has resulted in sales resurgence for his “Dangerous” album. It has sold 4 million copies since its release in November 1991, but recently – almost 60,000 copies have been sold. It’s now back in the top-10, but had fallen to #131 before the media blitz.  

Rolling Stone Magazine annual reader’s poll – U2 – artist of the year, best band and best album for “Achtung Baby.” Also – the group got best tour (Zoo TV) and lead Bono Hanson got best male singer, sexiest male singer and best songwriter.


Television news – February 15, 1993

Bill Cosby is set to star in four two-hour light mystery movies for NBC.

Magic Johnson will be a commentator with Mike Fratello and Dick Enberg for NBC’s coverage of the NBA All-Star game.

Eileen Roddenberry – wife of the late Star Trek creator – Gene Roddenberry – is awarded $4.5 million in residuals and profits from the TV show and its spinoffs (including movies). 

Passing – Richard Salant – retired CBS News president. He was 78.
