In Miami – depose Panamanian dictator Manual A. Noriega is convicted of eight of 10 drug and racketeering charges – two years after he was arrested and brought to the U.S. for trial.

An IRA car bomb goes off in London’s financial district, killing two and injuring eighty people.

Charles Keating Jr. is sentenced to the maximum 10 years in prison for defrauding thousands of investors in his S&L case. 

Crisis in Russia - The Russian Cabinet submits its resignation to President Yeltsin – then leaves Parliament. Economic reforms are being blamed. Before they quite, they voted to limit Yeltsin’s tenure as the country’s prime minister.

Libya - Yaser Arafat walks away from a plane crash in the desert that killed three of his crew members. The PLO leader had only scratches.

South Africa – the marriage of Nelson and Winnie Mandela – ends in separation after four years.

Time Magazine rolls out its new design –new look. Look for a “center well” that contains longer pieces of an analytical or investigative nature.

Tennis great Arthur Ashe reveals he has AIDS and has had it since 1988. He said he got the virus during one his two heart bypass operations before 1985 when testing began to screen blood for the disease.

St. Louis County authorities say they want to arrest Axel Rose of Guns N’ Roses so he can face assault and causing property damage charges at a GNR concert last July.

Royal Albert Hall - George Harrison gives his first British concert in 23 years. The concert was to promote the Natural Law party.

Comedian Sam Kinison is killed after his car was hit –head-on be a teenager in a truck. It happened out in the desert – not far from Nevada  - just north of Needles, CA on I-95.  Also in the car – his new wife – Malika – who was injured. He was to appear at the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino in Laughlin the same night. He and hid Malika had just married.

Hallmark Cards will sell its nine Univision TV stations and Univision TV network to a group led by investor A. Jerold Perenchio for $550 million.

 

Television news – April 8, 1992

Ready to say goodbye – Johnny Carson, The Golden Girls, Night Court and Bill Cosby – all on NBC and all say goodbye next month.

On “Saturday Night Live” – Sharon Stone hosts with musical guests Pearl Jam.

ABC’s “Roseanne” gets extended for two years.

In an “Entertainment Weekly” interview – Arsenio Hall declares war on Jay Leno, saying he doesn’t want anyone on his show to go on Jay’s “Tonight” show first.
