East and West Germany become one. Chancellor Helmut Kohl says that the new Germany will help stabilize Europe and that it will not be a “restless Reich” like Nazi Germany, which plunged Europe into its most disastrous war.
In Beijing, hijackers pick the wrong time to struggle with a crew trying to land a Boeing 727. As the plane was landing, the two hijackers began to wrestle with the flight crew, causing the plane to hit two others on the runway, killing 120 and injuring scores. Passengers in the first 14 rows of one of the hit planes escaped while all others from row 15 back perished.
In Israel, the army announces that it will begin distributing gas masks to the country’s 4.7 million residents following reports of an increased threat of war in the Persian Gulf. The announcement follows repeated threats by Iraqi President Suddam Hussein to attack Israel including an attack in which he said he would burn half the Jewish state with binary chemical weapons.
In Ft. Lauderdale, record store owner Charles Freeman is convicted on a misdemeanor obscenity charge for selling a record by the rap group 2 Live Crew. Selling the album “As Nasty As They Wanna Be,” could get him a year in jail and a $1000 fine. As he left the courtroom, Freeman (who owns E.C. records and is black) shouted “It’s unfair... the jury was all white. They don’t know where E C Records is. They don’t know a goddamned thing about the ghetto!”
In Niagara Falls, NY - although 1000 were expected, only 120 show-up for a 2 Live Crew concert. A second show was cancelled due to poor ticket sales. From a spokesman “I don’t know what happened... I don’t know if their hype is kind of dying out.”

Divorces - Mimi Rogers from Tom Cruise. When asked if the divorce has been finalized, she said “As far as I know, we’re divorced, but I’ve been so busy on this new film, that I haven’t had time to check, so I’m not sure. I bet that sounds pretty silly, huh?” Rogers is currently working on “The Rapture.”
Clint Eastwood is back in the recording studio, this time working with Randy Travis on “Smokin’ the Hive.”
Dies - Stefano Casiraghi - 30 year-old husband of Princess Caroline when his speedboat flips over while defending his title in a world championship race.
Kevin Nealon of “Saturday Night Live” adopts three monkeys abandoned by a Soviet circus that went bankrupt. The monkeys were left behind in the U.S. due to behavioral problems.
Actor Corey Felman (19) pleads not guilty to a heroin possession charge. Feldman is enrolled in a round-the-clock drug program.
