The Senate rejects President Reagan’s nomination of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court by a 58-42 vote. 

President Reagan announces that Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev will visit Washington for a summit beginning Dec. 7 to sign a historic treaty to abolish intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

In a somewhat surprising decision, President Reagan nominates Douglas Ginsburg with one year of experience as a judge, to the U.S. Supreme Court.

President Reagan bans all imports from Iran, including oil and cut off virtually all U.S. exports that it receives.

The House votes for legislation requiring banks and other credit card issuers to give consumers information about interest rates, financial charges and other fees when they apply for cards through magazine advertisements, direct mailings or telephone solicitations.

The Dow plunges156 points – its second biggest loss in history.

 First Lady hurt – It’s revealed that Patti Davis will not show up for her grandmother’s memorial service. Edith Davis, mother of Nancy Reagan passed away at 91.

The FDA says clinical studies on the experimental Alzheimer’s drug – THA have been halted after a number of test subjects experienced changes in liver chemistry.

Doctors operate again on Jessica McClure’s injured right foot and officials said the 18-month-old girl who spent 2 ½ days stuck in a well night lose the tips of two toes nut not her entire foot.

The parents of Jessica McClure say that they have no plans to turn the child’s 58-hour ordeal in abandoned water well into a book.

Penthouse Magazine publisher Bob Guccione announces that he has agreed to buy the Saturday Review magazine.


Sports news – October 23, 1987

The Minnesota Twins take the World Series, finally beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in game seven.

Bruce Matthews of the Houston Oilers sues the club and the NFL for $10 million. He alleges that the league and the Oilers have conspired, in violation of antitrust law, to prevent him from negotiating or signing with other NFL teams.


Music news – October 23, 1987

Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama is seven months pregnant. She’s married to the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.

The Bee Gees single “You Win Again” is bombing on the charts. It’s from “ESP,” their first album in six years. It’s doing even worse on the national charts.

Just in time for Halloween – “Elvira” – mistress of the dark will host NBC-TV’s “Friday Night Videos” this week.

On Saturday Night Live this week – Sean Penn is guest host with musical guests The Pull and rap artist L.L. Cool J.

On HBO this week – “Billy Joel From Leningrad, U.S.S.R.” 

Pop artist Tommy James tells USA Today he has made over $1 million from remakes of his songs. Two of them are currently on the pop charts – “Mony Mony” – Billy Idol and “I Think We’re Alone Now” – Tiffany. Amazing!!


Television news – October 23, 1987

Don’t miss “The Search for Houdini,” a two-hour special on Halloween night. Psychics will try to communicate with the legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. William Shatner hosts. 

Singer Sheena Easton will replace actress Lorraine Bracco in a four-episode “Miami Vice. Ms. Bracco has the flu.
